Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has admitted that Manchester United was lucky in their win over fierce rivals Chelsea on the opening day of the Premier League season last Sunday. The Red Devils hammered their opponents with a 4-0 scoreline but that was not exactly how the game could be defined as Chelsea had chances of their own which they failed to convert. It was just not the right kind of showing by the Europa League holders and Jordan feels United got lucky.
The Story About The Manchester United Win Over Chelsea
United took the lead in the first half when Marcus Rashford earned and converted his penalty against the run of play at Old Trafford. The visitors looked quite comfortable and precise with their attack on the ball and were unlucky not find the back of the net as the hit the woodwork on two occasions. But three goals in a space of 14 second-half minutes put the game beyond Chelsea and Frank Lampard’s start in the Premier League ended in quite a harsh defeat.
However, ex-Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has stated that Manchester United was lucky. The game outlined Chelsea’s mistakes rather than Solskjaer’s team dominating the whole ninety minutes. The 51-year-old English businessman spoke to talkSPORT and said, “I look at Man United and United fans will say ‘well what do you want’. I think they have got very lucky today. Chelsea deserved to be in this game. [Chelsea have] somehow or another contrived to be the architects of their own downfall. They then capitulated. That will, and should, slightly unnerve Frank Lampard.”
Jordan further went on to explain how Lampard can go about his next few games, “It will be interesting what Frank does next, whether he is going to pin them in the dressing room or leave it until they get back. That will be an interesting discussion.
I thought Chelsea dominated large proportions of this game and can look at it and say ‘how have we managed to come away from this losing 4-0?’ It will be very interesting to see what Frank Lampard takes from this game. Everybody can take strength from things going your way. He has got some real adversity now, he has just been handed his head in the first game.”
The Story Of Frank Lampard’s Time At The Club So Far
Lampard had just one year of management before joining Chelsea. That was, as he spent a season with Derby County. He almost guided them to Premier League promotion. The 41-year-old Englishman has a tough job. This is because Chelsea lost star player Eden Hazard to Real Madrid in the summer. The West London club was also hit with a transfer ban.
Chelsea improved their performance against Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup. The game ended 2-2 but Lampard’s side was unlucky once again. Jurgen Klopp’s Reds prevailed on penalties to lift the continental trophy.
It was never going to be easy for Lampard. That is to fill in the void left by Maurizio Sarri. He may have to adapt quickly or face the wrath of the Chelsea board. It means that he could be sacked soon unless results don’t improve.
