The world’s most expensive goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga is currently going through a tough phase in his career as he has lost the first-choice status at Chelsea after some miserable performances throughout this campaign. Frank Lampard is seriously showing concern as he is starting 38-year-old backup keeper Willy Caballero in the last five games, all competitions.
Chelsea defence is conceding goals in almost every game they are playing. They are lacking the ability to get clean-sheets.
They are currently second in terms of conceding goals in the top half of the Premier League table and in the very last game they lost 3-0 at home against Bayern Munich and Kepa had to see it from the bench.
The latest report from Spanish TV channel El Chiringuito TV about Kepa Arrizabalaga and Jan Oblak
Chelsea has made a huge Kepa+£25m offer to get the sign of Atletico de Madrid shot-stopper Jan Oblak. Lampard is seriously unhappy with the Spanish international and is looking for his replacement to boost his defence next term. The goalie has fallen down the pecking order after a few errors that he has made in recent times, with his overall play being rather poor.
Chelsea is on their way to qualify for next season’s Uefa Champions League after a major derby win last weekend against Spurs. So playing in the Champions League might help to get Oblak more smoothly, which is the feeling going around at Stamford Bridge at present.
The 25-year-old Slovenian goal-keeper is currently one of the best around in his position and also have three years remaining on his contract at the Spanish club. Atletico won’t let him go for cheap and Kepa plus some decent money being offered to the La Liga outfit can see this deal done.
Lampard was asked about the situation last week if he is discussing the matter of selling their record signing to the Chelsea board, he said: “Certainly not. That fills a lot of headlines for people.”
“I am absolutely together with all the club and the board because we all want the best. And I am paid to make decisions. So with the form, I have to consider the goalkeeper position. Recently it has just changed, but that is nothing final. All Kepa needs to do is train and show a great attitude, as I demand from all the players. And things can obviously change. But all I want is the best for the team.”
What next for Chelsea with regards to their goalkeeping woes?
If Chelsea is ready to sell Kepa Arrizabalaga (despite Lampard’s comments), Oblak would be an ideal replacement for him if not better. Oblak has kept so far 16 clean sheets in 34 apps in all competitions this season. He has proved himself one of the best in the world.
On the other hand, Willy Caballero has been the Blues’ first-choice keeper in recent times. This could be a huge problem for Kepa. He will be keen to replace David De Gea in the Spanish national side for Euros 2020. Things could get really interesting in the days to come. Only time will tell what will happen now.
