Talking Points: Chelsea 2-1 Manchester City; As Blues Gift Liverpool Early Title Win

It was a clash of the heavyweights. Chelsea and Manchester City took on each other in what was a match of great significance. Not only for these two teams but also for the would-be Premier League champions, Liverpool. As per the statistics, if Manchester City would have drawn or lost against Chelsea, the Reds will automatically be crowned champions. They stood on 86 points as the league leaders. So there were a number of eyes on this mammoth clash. The Blues and the Cityzens looked to battle it out at Stamford Bridge.

Both the teams showed their intent to get the better of the other. The hosts were the first to take the lead as Christian Pulisic paced his way through the Manchester City defence to put the ball in the back of the net in the 36th minute of the match. The Citizens, however, came back into the match via a brilliant free-kick from Kevin De Bruyne in the 55th minute.

Joe Cole spoke about the opening goal of the game and said, “The quality of the finish was unbelievable but it’s the run with the ball from that distance.”

“Mendy made it easy for him but don’t take any credit away from Pulisic because what he did there was he slowed him down and that touch just lifted it over, and the finish when he just opened his body up was exquisite.”

The Hard-Fought Win For The Blues

Pulisic once again looked to put his side in the lead with a superb run past the City defenders but was denied by Kyle Walker who came up with a goalline clearance. However, the American international was once again involved in an incident which saw Fernandinho use his hand to stop the ball from getting over the goal line, thus resulting in a red card and a penalty. Willian, who has never missed for the Blues, slotted it past his compatriot Ederson to seal the match for his side.

This victory signifies that Liverpool wins the Premier League trophy, a feat that took them 30 long years to achieve. This also widens the gap between Chelsea and Manchester United, who are currently at the fourth and fifth spot respectively, as the race for the top four positions heats up.

Liverpool win the Premier League trophy

City’s defeat at the hands of Chelsea meant that the Reds were the Champions of England. After missing out narrowly on the opportunity to win the coveted silverware just by a single point against Manchester City, it was sweet revenge for Jurgen Klopp’s men. They will take on the newly crowned Premier League champions in their own backyard.
