Watch: Tim Paine Fined For Breaching ICC Code Of Conduct

Tim Paine

Reports fly in from Australia that the Aussie Test skipper Tim Paine has been heavily fined by ICC for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third day of the third Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. As a penalty, Tim Paine will be fined 15% of his match fee. No response has been heard from Cricket Australia or the skipper till now.

The third day of the third Test match was quite a success for the Aussies. After successfully containing the Indian batting order to the first-inning score of a mere 244. The Australian batsmen ended the day on a high. However, a heated argument between Australian captain Tim Paine and on-field umpire Paul Wilson proved to be costly for the captain. During India’s first innings, veteran test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara came in to bat at no.3. The 32-year-old once nicked an edge in the leg side which was caught by Australian wicketkeeper Mathew Wade.

The Incident Related To Tim Paine That Went Viral:

The rest of the team joined him in doing so. When Paul Wilson ruled it out, Tim Paine used a review and went upstairs. However, due to a lack of conclusive evidence on the snicko and the hotspot. TV Umpire, Bruce Oxenford gave the benefit of doubt to the batsman. Tim Paine was furious with this decision. He reportedly abused Paul Wilson. The duo got involved in a heated argument, only to be separated by the players. As per reports, the stump mic had caught Paine saying that the third umpire needed to examine the off-side Hot Spot rather than looking at just the leg-side version.

After a complaint was filed against the player, ICC did detailed research. They finally said in an official statement, “Paine was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to ‘showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an International Match’.”

ICC Code of Conduct:

The ICC Code of Conduct is part of the ICC’s continuing efforts to maintain the public image. It also maintains the popularity, and integrity of cricket by providing: (a) an effective means to deter any participant from conducting themselves improperly on and off the ‘field-of-play’ or in a manner that is contrary to the ‘spirit of cricket’. And (b) a robust disciplinary procedure pursuant to which all matters of improper conduct can be dealt with fairly, with certainty and in an expeditious manner.

Keeping these factors in mind, ICC gives points to players on the basis of the extent of their misconduct. The higher the points, the higher are the chances of being fined or suspended. If the points exceed a certain number, the players may have to face severe punishments.

For example, in 2019, while taking a run, Virat Kohli made an avoidable shoulder contact with the bowler Beuran Hendricks. For this, his offence rating was 2.21 and he was reprimanded. In 2019, after dismissing the batsman, Navdeep pointed him towards the pavilion. In fact, he proceeded while looking at the batsman. For this, his offensive rating was 2.5.
