Delhi put a challenging score of 159/4 on a difficult batting surface at Chennai courtesy of a brilliant 53 of 39 balls by opener Prithwi Shaw. Rishav Pant and Steve Smith’s handy contributions of 30+ in final overs must also deserve praise. Most of the teams have successfully defended 150+ at Chennai this season. Delhi also did manage to win but after a Super Over.

Jonny Bairstow gave Sunrisers a flying start by scoring 38 in 18. After David Werner’s early dismissal, it was all Kane Williamson’s heroics that the match went to the super over in the end. The New Zealand skipper’s unbeaten knock of 66 of 51 balls was full of class.

However, the strange thing that SRH made after the game was tied, is not to send Jonny Bairstow to bat in the super over. David Werner and Kane Williamson could put only 7 runs on the board against Axar Patel’s impressive spin bowling. In the end, it was too little to defend for SRH star Rashid Khan and Delhi chased it down comfortably.

Virender Sehwag took the matter to his Instagram where he said that he won’t have any idea why Sunrisers did not select their cleanest hitter Jonny Bairstow in the super over. 

Sehwag tweeted. “Unless Bairstow was in the toilet, can not get why would he not be your first choice in a #SuperOver when he scored 38 of 18 in the main innings and looked the cleanest hitter. Baffling, Hyderabad fought well but have only themselves to blame for strange decisions. #SRHvsDC

Hyderabad middle order struggled as they were without their seasonal campaigner Manish Pandey once again. Pandey who is a part of the IPL since its beginning and has played 149 matches was warming the bench. His replacement Virat Singh only managed to 4 runs of 14 balls in a crucial phase of the run chase.

Werner said it was a harsh call from the selectors. SRH’s other middle-order batters Kedar Yadav, Vijay Shankar and Abhishek Sharma also had a disappointing night with the bat.

It depends on the selectors, it was a harsh call as per my opinion (On leaving out Manish Pandey).
