Chelsea is the latest team to express an interest in SL Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, who is also a target for Manchester City. Nunez now plays for SL Benfica and represents Uruguay.
In a report from Portuguese newspaper Record, Chelsea have joined the battle to acquire SL Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, who is also wanted by Manchester City, Inter Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain among other clubs.
The Uruguayan club Penarol developed Nunez via their development system, and he went on to make 22 first-team appearances for them, scoring four goals and assisting in another. When he joined for Spanish second division club UD Almeria in the summer of 2019, the teenager made an immediate impact, scoring 16 goals and providing three assists in 32 appearances.
The Update On The Player That Is Wanted By Both Premier League Blues
Nunez was on the radar of many major teams in Europe as a result of this last year, but it was Benfica who ultimately decided to sign him. And the 22-year-old has so far rewarded the trust placed in him by the Portuguese giants with a string of outstanding performances. Twenty goals and twelve assists have been generated by him in 52 appearances, with six of those goals coming in only eight games during the 2012/13 season.
One of those goals came against Barcelona last month when Benfica defeated the Catalans 3-0 in the UEFA Champions League. Afterwards, his reputation has only grown stronger as more and more teams take notice of him and show interest in what he has accomplished. Manchester City is one of the suitors, which is understandable given the fact that they were unable to sign a replacement for Sergio Aguero this past summer.
Indeed, after losing their all-time top goalscorer, Manchester City was unable to find a suitable successor, having been unsuccessful in their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur sensation Harry Kane. A move for Dusan Vlahovic of Fiorentina has since been suggested, but it seems that Pep Guardiola and his team are keeping their options open, with Nunez also surfacing as a potential target.
Can Chelsea Be Successful In Getting Him?
A versatile player who can play as a centre-forward, an auxiliary striker, or even on the left, with his versatility and all-around skills, the 22-year-old has the potential to be an excellent fit at the Etihad Stadium. In their pursuit of the Uruguayan international, they will now have to battle with rivalry from their arch-rivals Chelsea.
Chelsea strengthened their frontline this summer with the acquisition of Romelu Lukaku, who set a new club record at the time. Timo Werner, on the other hand, does not seem to be connecting with the team, and he may be fired despite considerable interest from around Europe. Nunez, as a result, may be considered a substitute for the German international, but he can also be used in Tuchel’s 3-4-2-1 formation in the wide offensive midfield positions. Nunez is a native of Mexico.
Aside from the two English powerhouses, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain are all said to be interested in acquiring the 22-year-old international, who has a huge release clause of €150m and is available on a free transfer this summer. When he becomes available, it will be fascinating to watch if any of the teams make a play to sign him in the future. Nunez seems to be a guy in high demand for the time being.
