SA Vs WI 2023: All Records Broken In The 2nd T20I Between The Two Sides

The SuperSport park in Centurion yesterday bore witness to a record-breaking day of T20 international cricket. The match between two sides who are expert proponents of the shortest format. On a pitch that Quinton de Kock described as “A Road”, batsmen of both sides made merry on favorable conditions, making absolute mincemeat of the hapless bowlers, who just could not catch a break at any stage of the game.
In the end it was South Africa who prevailed and levelled the three-match series at 1 apiece. The hosts did not have too much trouble in reaching the mammoth target for sure.

With that being said, let us have a look at some of the many records that were shattered in the SA Vs WI 2nd T20I:

1. SA Vs WI: Record of the highest run-chase in T20 internationals

South Africa easily ended up chasing a frankly ridiculous target of 259. They also claimed the record of having the highest ever run chase in T20 internationals. Bulgaria previously held it, chasing down 245. It was put forth by Serbia. Bulgaria ended up scoring 246 for the loss of 4 wickets. As far as full member nations are concerned, Australia held the record. They had chased New Zealand’s 244 way back in 2018.

2. Highest score in the powerplay

In order to chase the herculean target put by the Windies, it was imperative that the Proteas had an excellent powerplay. This was important to make sure that they were in the game. Well, they had a powerplay for the ages as both Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks didn’t waste a single ball in the first six overs.
The ball was flying to all corners of the ground. And by the time the field restrictions were lifted after 6 overs, the score read 103/0. The 100-run barrier breached for the first time in the powerplay. The previous record was held by their opponents for the evening, who had scored 98 in the powerplay vs Sri Lanka in 2021.

3. Highest number of runs conceded in the second innings
While chasing 258 was unbelievable and frankly mind boggling in itself, even more astounding is the fact that West Indies managed to lose the game by conceding so much. In fact, they broke the record of conceding the most runs in the second innings by a fair distance. Serbia previously conceding 246 being the next best in the sequence.

4. Johnson Charles eclipses Gayle in this SA vs WI match

Chris Gayle is the Universe Boss for a reason. And that reason is transforming the West Indies into perennial giants in the shortest format of the game. His exploits in this format are the stuff of legend. And there is a reason why he is a modern day legend in Windies cricket. However, last night, for one day, his countryman overshowed him.
Johnson Charles was on an almighty roll yesterday. He was showing no mercy and bludgeoning every single South Africa bowler on an absolute hiding enroute his 118 of just 46 balls. In the midst of this, he replaced Chris Gayle of having scored the fastest century by a West Indian in T20 internationals. While Gayle had scored his ton against England in 47 balls, Charles took just 39 to reach his milestone.

5. Most runs scored in a T20 international

This game saw a total of 517 runs scored during the course of both innings. This is the first time in the history of the sport that the 500 run barrier has been crossed. That too in a T20 international between full-member nations. The previous record was from a match between India and West Indies.

A total of 489 runs were scored in the match. West Indies managed to get a tally of 245. On the other hand, India just one run short, at 244.
