Arsenal Transfer News: The 28-year-old Runar Alex Runarsson, Arsenal’s backup goalkeeper, will be put up for sale before the next season
Arsenal Transfer News: Football Insider claims that Arsenal will sell Runar Alex Runarsson this summer. Mikel Arteta is aiming to get rid of the 28-year-old Iceland national goalie before the next season.
Runarsson originally signed up with the Gunners in the summer of 2020. When Emiliano Martinez was traded to Aston Villa, the club signed him to take his position. In the 2020-21 season, the 28-year-old goalkeeper played six times for Arsenal. For Arteta’s squad, he held his own in goal. The Icelandic international has three shutouts and seven goals allowed.
Although he did spend the first season with the team, he didn’t see much action. Also, he has been subject to many loan movements after the first season. Runarsson has spent the previous two seasons on loan with OH Leuven and Alanyaspor.
He is now contributing well to his Turkish club Alanyaspor. The 28-year-old has started each of Turkey’s Super League matches this season. And he’s only let in four goals while keeping 23 clean sheets.
Arsenal Transfer News: What’s the matter?
This summer, the former Dijon star will return to his first club. Until then, he is under contract with Arsenal until the next summer of 2024. Yet, the Gunners will want to cash in on the Iceland international before the end of his contract in around 15 months.
The Gunners, who have been dominant this season, have already improved their goaltending. They also don’t have much use for a 28-year-old goalkeeper like that. Hence, it seems logical to release him.
What’s next for Runar Alex Runarsson?
In the summer, the Gunners acquired Matt Turner from the New England Revolution. Since joining Arsenal, the American international has appeared in the majority of their cup matches. He’s started almost every game in the Europa League and FA Cup.
Meanwhile, Aaron Ramsdale has become Mikel Arteta’s go-to goalie. Their season in the Premier League has been built around the 24-year-old England international. He has played every minute of the Gunners’ Premier League season thus far as they look to win the league for the first time in 20 years.
Ramsdale has been outstanding in goal for his team this season. He has the joint-most shutouts (12) of any goalie in the league. It would not be surprising if Runarsson left in the summer now that their goalkeeping position is settled.
