AB de Villiers Discloses How Delhi Daredevils Backstabbed Him Before IPL 2021

Few players have left a mark quite like AB de Villiers, fondly known as “Mr. 360.” His prowess on the field is nothing short of legendary, captivating the hearts of cricket enthusiasts worldwide. This article delves into the remarkable journey of this cricket virtuoso, tracing his trajectory from IPL debut to becoming an integral part of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

AB de Villiers’ tryst with the Indian Premier League (IPL) commenced in 2008 when he made his debut with Delhi Daredevils, now known as Delhi Capitals. However, it was in 2011 that the cricketing landscape witnessed a seismic shift as RCB acquired the maestro in a game-changing move during the IPL auction. This acquisition, worth INR 5 crore, proved to be a watershed moment, setting the stage for a glorious association that spanned 11 seasons.

What’s the matter?

Throughout his tenure with RCB, de Villiers etched his name in the annals of IPL history by delivering performances that transcended the ordinary. His bat orchestrated symphonies of power, finesse, and innovation, dismantling bowling attacks with unparalleled ease. The electrifying chemistry between de Villiers and Virat Kohli formed the backbone of RCB‘s batting lineup, creating moments that fans will cherish for years to come.

However, the cricketing journey is not always a smooth sail, and de Villiers candidly shared a pivotal moment from the 2010 season. In a revelation on his YouTube channel, he recounted a surprising turn of events when, despite assurances of retention, he found himself released by the franchise. The lack of clear communication during that period cast a shadow of uncertainty over his career.

Reflecting on those turbulent times, de Villiers admitted, “You’re unsure of your career.” Despite a modest IPL season with only five games played, his stellar international performances kept the flame of hope alive. Fate smiled upon him during the subsequent auction, leading to a life-altering moment when RCB secured his services. This twist of destiny not only rejuvenated his career but also solidified his place in the hearts of RCB fans.

Beyond the cricketing arena, AB de Villiers’ journey is a proof of the resilience and the transformative power of opportunity. His saga serves as inspiration for aspiring cricketers, illustrating that setbacks can pave the way for spectacular comebacks. The unpredictable nature of sports mirrors the unpredictability of life itself, where fortunes can change with the swing of a bat.

As the IPL evolved over the years, so did de Villiers’ role within the league. From his early days with Delhi Daredevils to becoming an RCB stalwart, he witnessed the league’s growth into a global cricketing spectacle. His adaptability and ability to evolve with the changing dynamics of the game showcase not just cricketing prowess but a keen cricketing intellect.

What did he say?

“When I played in the 2010 season, I got called into the office and was told ‘you are going to get retained, young AB de Villiers’. I sat alongside David Warner in that meeting. It came as a huge surprise to me a week or two later when I realised I had been released. So the communication wasn’t great back in the day, that must be different these days but it’s not a nice feeling,” de Villiers said on his YouTube channel.

“You’re unsure of your career, at that time in 2010 I think I only played five games in that IPL season so a lot of doubts crept up in my mind. But I did have a very good international season. I kept playing good cricket and luckily for me the auction happened and I got picked up by RCB. That changed my life forever, so great memories with regards to that,” the 39-year-old added.

AB de Villiers emerges as a luminary, a player whose impact transcends statistics. His association with RCB, though marked by initial uncertainty, blossomed into an enduring legacy, leaving an indelible mark on the IPL’s rich history. As we celebrate the career of Mr. 360, let us not just recount numbers but cherish the moments that defined an era of cricketing brilliance.
