Arsenal Targets £40 Million Midfield Dynamo To Fill Xhaka Void

Arsenal is looking ahead to the upcoming summer transfer window. There is a lot of excitement surrounding the Emirates Stadium. It’s not just about their current Premier League and Champions League campaigns. So, the big question is how to strengthen the team and keep them on their upward path. It’s clear that Manager Mikel Arteta is actively searching for additional players to strengthen the team.

The midfield department is currently under scrutiny. Even with the £105m acquisition of Declan Rice last summer, the absence of Granit Xhaka is still felt. It’s interesting to see Odegaard taking charge of the creative aspect while Rice holds down the fort in midfield. However, there’s still something missing to fully complete the puzzle in the middle of the pitch. Jorginho and Thomas Partey, both approaching their thirties, along with Kai Havertz, who has been thriving in an advanced position, emphasise the need for a lasting solution. It seems that Arsenal is on the lookout for a midfielder who can step in and fill the void left by Xhaka for the long term.

According to reports from Portuguese outlet O Dia, via Sport Witness, it seems that Arsenal is showing interest in the promising young talent, Joao Gomes, from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Brazilian midfielder has certainly made an impression during his first year and a half at Molineux, catching the attention of not just Arsenal, but also their rivals Manchester United. But there are some complications with any potential deal because Gomes’ contract doesn’t expire until 2028 and he’s asking for a large sum, probably more than £40m.

Arsenal has shown great resillience this season, even without Xhaka. However, it’s clear that the Swiss maestro’s offensive skills have had a significant impact on the team. Nigel Winterburn praised Xhaka’s impact in the left-eight position, highlighting his importance in offensive moves. Given these factors, Gomes appears to be a suitable candidate to take on these responsibilities. According to data analyst Ben Mattinson, Gomes is highly regarded for his dynamic style of play and his ability to make a significant impact in the attacking third. His contributions for Wolverhampton demonstrate his knack for being a force to be reckoned with.

Gomes’ performance statistics highlight his strong fit for Arsenal’s midfield. Gomes has been absolutely outstanding on the field, with two goals and one assist to his name. His performance against arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur was particularly impressive. He truly showcases his incredible talent and skill. According to Mattinson, his defensive dedication is comparable to that of a relentless ball winner, much like Xhaka’s determination during his time at Arsenal. Gomes is an absolute beast when it comes to tackles. He’s in a league of his own, outperforming even Declan Rice. On average, he makes an impressive 3.9 tackles per game, putting him in the top 1% among players in Europe’s top five leagues.

Arsenal’s interest in Joao Gomes reflects their commitment to strengthening their squad in the ever-changing world of football. With the summer transfer window just around the corner, there’s a lot of excitement building up about potential new signings. Gomes has caught the attention as a promising player who could strengthen Arsenal’s midfield.

What did Arteta say?

Mikel Arteta said after the game against Bayern Munich: “It was a really intense match. I think we started really well. We started to dominate it, to play in the opponents’ half and we generated some momentum, scored a really good goal with B. And there obviously was the moment in the match when Ben White is in front of Neuer to make it 2-0 and then the game and the tie changes quickly.  We didn’t [score] and then unfortunately today, we have given two very poor goals away and against a team with that individual quality, they’re going to punish you. The team reacted really well. It is because the game can become very chaotic and you can start to lose some discipline and start to allow them to run, and in that moment, you can lose the tie.”
