£85m player rejects Arsenal for a summer move

The transfer market is beginning to heat up and the rumours are not stopping. Arsenal, after a demanding but title-less season, are already planning their next moves. With the need to reinforce their attack and to add some unbalance on the flanks, the names being bandied about in London are getting louder and louder. Among them is Rodrygo Goes, Real Madrid’s Brazilian, who has been on the decline this season and has been linked with a possible move away from the club. However, not everything points to the winger being willing to make the move to the Premier League so easily.

According to Football Insider, Rodrygo is not interested in swapping Madrid for London this summer. Despite Arsenal showing firm interest and being willing to pay around £85m, the Brazilian would still prioritise staying at a club he considers to be a European powerhouse. Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson told the podcast Inside Track that the player could regain his place in the starting XI if Xabi Alonso takes the bench at the Santiago Bernabeu. In his opinion, Arsenal are not yet at the competitive level or prestigious enough to attract a player of that profile.

From the point of view of a journalist with years of following European football, this situation reflects more than a simple negative. It speaks to perception. Although Arsenal eliminated Real Madrid with authority in the last Champions League, that blow has not been enough to change how certain players value their hierarchy. Rodrygo, at just 24, still feels he can establish himself in Madrid. It’s not just about minutes or status, but about the crest on his chest. The white shirt still weighs more heavily in certain decisions.

For the Gunners, this kind of response should serve as a mirror. If a player like Rodrygo still doesn’t see Arsenal as a superior or equal destination to Real Madrid, something is missing. The structure is there. The footballing approach is there. But the titles are still not coming. And that makes noise. Arteta has built a competitive, dynamic team, but without trophies to back up that growth. Meanwhile, Madrid can afford to have a player like Rodrygo on the bench without the project faltering. That is the difference.

From another angle, this negative also has its positive reading. Forcing an operation with a player who does not have the conviction to join can be counterproductive. Better to target talents who really see Arsenal as an important step, not a plan B. Players who feel an affinity for the style of play, who value the sporting project and not just the salary or the guaranteed minutes. It is not about convincing anyone. It is about attracting for what is being built. And there, North London still has room to grow.
