Arsenal and Chelsea back in the race for Sporting CP defender

Arsenal and Chelsea back in the race for Sporting CP defender

Sporting CP’s title chase may have brought Ousmane Diomande back into the spotlight, but the bigger story now hangs over his future. Interest from heavyweight Premier League clubs has gathered pace, and the summer window promises to throw his name into daily headlines. With transfer rumours heating up, Sporting know they have a battle on their hands.

Diomande has already drawn glances from clubs with deeper pockets and broader ambitions. His form this year has reminded many of his raw qualities and, more importantly, his potential. As June nears, the question is no longer if there will be offers, but who will make the first serious move.

According to A Bola via Sport Witness, Arsenal and Chelsea are tracking Diomande with growing interest. Sporting expect offers and fear they won’t be able to hold on to their prized centre-back. The Ivorian has found top form again after a rocky stretch earlier this season, and that consistency has caught the eyes of several clubs across Europe.

His contract carries an €80 million clause, yet Sporting could be willing to sell for closer to €60 million. That number tempts sides like Bayern Munich, Brighton, and Aston Villa, who are reportedly monitoring his situation closely. Chelsea have room to strengthen at the back, while Arsenal remain admirers.

However, the Gunners may hesitate to spend big in an area they already view as stable. They had once seen Diomande as a fallback in case William Saliba left, but with the Frenchman set to stay and a new deal underway, that scenario seems unlikely now. Even so, if a top defender comes on the market, serious clubs usually don’t turn away.

From a neutral lens, Diomande looks like a player who fits the Premier League’s rhythm. He’s aggressive without being reckless and strong without overcommitting. Chelsea could see him as a long-term partner for Levi Colwill, or perhaps a competitor for the role. They need structure at the back and have rarely hesitated to spend on defenders.

Arsenal, on the other hand, appear more calculated. Their defensive core already ranks among the best in England. Spending a large chunk of their funds on a position they consider secure may not be their priority, especially with other gaps to address. That being said, Arteta has always valued depth and athletic defenders who can play a high line. Diomande ticks many of those boxes.

The more likely destination, however, may come down to who is ready to move fastest. Chelsea need centre-backs, and their current direction suggests they will outbid most others for players under 23. Diomande fits their profile better, and they have a recent habit of beating others to signings. Sporting, though, will not go down quietly.

They’ll squeeze every euro they can, and with €60 million on the table, they might just settle. Expect offers. Expect noise. But unless Arsenal change their tune or lose a defender in the window, Diomande may wear blue next season—not red.
