Arsenal are closing in on the signing of one of the best strikers in the world

Arsenal have been feeling that pang of urgency for months, caused by a lack of goals when everything else seems to be flowing. Mikel Arteta has made no secret of his concern. He knows that to make that final leap, he needs a reliable striker, one who can find the back of the net when the pressure is on.

Amidst rumours and names that appear and disappear, Viktor Gyokeres is now emerging as the player who could fit into the forward line. The Swede has become an obsession for the London club. His numbers are frightening, his physique imposing, and his ambition seductive. At the Emirates, they dream of a number nine who can make defences tremble.

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of one of the best strikers in the world

According to Sacha Tavolieri, a journalist specialising in transfer news, the Gunners already have a personal agreement in place with Gyokeres. The Swedish striker, who has earned every bit of praise since arriving at Sporting CP in 2023, had a brutal season: 102 games, 97goals. Brutal.

With a contract until 2028, Sporting still retains control, but Arsenal are confident of securing his signing for a reasonable fee, well below the £100 million release clause. Arteta’s men have pulled out of the bidding for Benjamin Sesko to focus fully on the Swede. They want to close the deal soon, aware that other European giants are lurking.

Opinion:

The Gyokeres deal, if it goes through, could mark a turning point for Arsenal. It’s not just about goals. It’s the constant threat, the feeling that every attack will end in a shot on goal. With Viktor up front, Saka and Martinelli will find more space, Odegaard will have a real reference point, and Havertz will be able to free himself from responsibilities that are not his.

The Premier League demands voracious strikers, capable of deciding tight games. Viktor has proven himself to be one of those. Betting on him and not on Sesko reflects a clear vision: Arteta wants a complete striker, with the mental and physical muscle to perform now. It may seem like a risk because Sesko offers more room for growth, but Arsenal needs immediate results. After coming close to glory in the league, taking a step back to wait for a youngster to mature would be repeating old mistakes.

However, it’s not all enthusiasm. That £100 million clause, even if not paid in full, will weigh on the balance sheet. It forces other operations to be adjusted, perhaps slowing down signings in less urgent positions. However, not signing a striker like this could cost more in the long run. A team that aspire to compete with City or Madrid cannot be short on firepower.

The fans are asking for signs of ambition. Gyokeres represents that. His arrival would send a clear message: Arsenal mean business, no excuses. If they manage to close the deal below the clause, Andrea Berta will have played his cards right. The key is not to mortgage the squad.

A striker who scores almost a goal per game can sustain the team on the most tense nights, those where the difference between celebrating a title and settling for crumbs is an accurate shot. With Viktor Gyokeres, Arsenal could finally have that security. The Premier League does not forgive half measures, and Arteta knows it. If this Swede maintains his instinct, the Gunners can dream big and stop looking enviously at those who lift trophies every May.
