Chelsea or Arsenal? Xavi Simons’ future points to England
Xavi Simons is back in the European football spotlight. At 22 years of age, the Dutch winger doesn’t want to wait any longer. After a short spell as a player owned by RB Leipzig, he has already told the German club that he wants to leave. Chelsea and Arsenal have taken note. Both clubs have him on their radar. In London, the Premier League giants are looking to make a move. The player’s desire is clear: to try his luck in England, and although Barcelona and Bayern have shown interest, everything points to English football as his next destination. Leipzig, which only wants to part with one player this summer, could be forced to negotiate if the financial offer is convincing.
Arsenal look to the future; Chelsea want to react
The Gunners are coming off seasons that left bittersweet feelings. The 2024/25 runners-up spot was a warning, but the collapse in the final stretch hurt again. With Arteta at the helm, the project is still alive, although it needs reinforcements in key positions. On the other side of the capital, Chelsea have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions and results. With constant changes on the bench and signings without a clear direction, they are now trying to rebuild with more defined profiles.
In this context, both clubs share a common goal. Xavi Simons has asked to leave Leipzig, according to information from Football Insider. The Dutch winger was signed in January for £41.8 million after a long loan spell from PSG. However, his definitive adaptation to the German club has been short-lived. Leipzig will only agree to sell him if they receive an offer of more than £60 million.
The interest is not surprising. Simons has dribbling skills, vision and unpredictability. He plays well on both wings, although he performs better on the left. He can score goals and pass the ball. Above all, Simons has character. The Dutchman is not a classic winger, but he does not limit himself to opening up the field; he likes to get involved in the middle and combine with other players. That versatility appeals to both Chelsea and Arsenal, who want more dynamism in their attacking lines.
Simons must choose carefully
If immediate adaptation is the goal, Chelsea can offer him minutes from the start. Madueke’s departure has opened up space in the team. However, the sporting project has not yet settled. The club are searching for identity, but cannot find it. Arsenal, on the other hand, have built a solid foundation with Arteta. They have a clear idea, a young and competitive core, and are now looking for depth.
Simons would benefit from an orderly environment. At the Emirates, he could learn without so much initial pressure, surrounded by teammates with well-defined roles. In addition, his style would fit in with Arsenal’s associative football. However, if Simons is looking to be a key player from day one, Stamford Bridge offers him that possibility.
In our opinion, Arsenal seem like the smarter destination. Not only because of what they can offer him in terms of a sporting project, but because Simons needs stability, not another fleeting stop. Sometimes, the right environment is worth more than an immediate starting spot.
