Mikel Arteta wants to sell these 2 Arsenal players in January

Mikel Arteta considers major squad changes as Arsenal weigh financial balance, injuries, and future transfer priorities

A report from TEAMtalk has created a stir among Arsenal fans, claiming that Mikel Arteta plans to sell two key players in the January transfer window. The report states that Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard could be sold by the club. The main reason is that Arsenal spent around £260 million this summer, and now the club is trying to balance its finances. Jesus earns about £265,000 per week and Trossard around £90,000, so their departure could ease the wage burden on the club.

Looking at the current situation, Gabriel Jesus has struggled with injury for a long time. He underwent knee surgery and has not played a single match this season. He may return around the New Year, but his fitness remains uncertain.

Leandro Trossard’s case is even more worrying, as he has not started a Premier League match and has played only 48 minutes across two substitute appearances. Since both players are under contract until 2027, Arsenal must find buyers and negotiate good deals. Some European teams have shown interest in both players, so a deal remains possible. Meanwhile, reports claim Arsenal are eyeing a big January move, with Barcelona’s contract uncertainty opening the door, and the club continues to explore other options.

Right decision or risky move?

The question now is whether selling both players would be the right decision. Arsenal have invested heavily in recent years, reportedly spending over £300 million on new players. Selling Jesus and Trossard could provide some relief to the club and create financial flexibility for upcoming transfers. Arteta is reshaping the squad, and the buzz around Viktor Gyokeres suggests Jesus’ role in attack could shrink further. Arteta has used Kai Havertz in a new role, which has limited Trossard’s opportunities.

The other side of the argument is just as strong, though. Although injuries have plagued Jesus, he still has the talent to influence big games. If he stays fit and plays consistently, few can question his ability. As for Trossard, his versatility makes him a key option in the squad, especially when the team needs an effective player off the bench. Meanwhile, competition in attack has intensified with players like Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, and Gabriel Martinelli fighting for places. Some argue that removing unnecessary players would improve team morale and focus.

Ultimately, the decision depends on the offers Arsenal receive and how Arteta assesses the squad’s depth. It is worth noting that Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester United are closely monitoring Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi ahead of a potential 2026 Bosman move, and this shows the club may look to reduce older resources while planning new investments. Perhaps the right strategy is to sell one player to strike a balance, but a full overhaul may still be the path Arsenal needs to win trophies.
