Arsenal will reportedly look to sign 23-year-old French holding midfielder

Arsenal show strong interest in Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume as they explore a potential €30m move ahead of the January window.

Lucien Agoume’s story has taken several turns over the past few years. Each step has shaped him into the midfielder he is today. Born in Yaoundé, the French-Cameroonian midfielder developed his skills at FC Sochaux. Inter Milan spotted his potential and signed him in 2019. His time at Inter did not go as planned. He struggled for regular minutes, and his progress slowed. Still, football often gives players second chances. For Agoume, that came in Spain with Sevilla.

When he joined Los Nervionenses on loan in early 2024, few expected him to make such an impact. His calmness on the ball, sharp reading of play, and tireless defensive work turned him into one of Sevilla’s most reliable players. The club later made the move permanent. Since then, he has played over fifty matches, scoring twice and assisting four times. His consistency has caught the eye of several clubs across Europe. According to Spanish outlet Vamos Mi Sevilla FC, Arsenal have shown strong interest. They have already contacted Sevilla about a possible January move.

Arsenal’s scouts have tracked him for months. Their interest now looks serious. Even after signing Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard in the summer, Arsenal still want another midfielder who brings energy and control. Since Norgaard is in his thirties, the club want a younger option who can grow alongside Declan Rice. Reports claim Sevilla might ask for around €30 million. Manchester United have also entered the picture. Arsenal must act quickly before another club takes advantage.

Would Agoume be the right move for Arsenal?

Whether Lucien Agoume suits Arsenal’s plans depends on how one views the situation. At 23, he already shows traits similar to Moises Caicedo’s aggression and the anticipation once seen in N’Golo Kanté. He reads danger early, tackles cleanly, and moves the ball forward with confidence. His versatility allows him to play as a holding midfielder or in a more advanced role. These strengths make him an appealing choice for a team planning long-term.

However, Arsenal’s midfield already has strong competition. Declan Rice is a guaranteed starter. Zubimendi and Norgaard fill the other central positions. Breaking into that setup could take time. Agoume’s earlier career included several loan spells and inconsistent minutes. His adjustment might need patience. Still, his hunger, physicality, and wish to play in the Premier League make him worth considering.

If Arsenal decide to sell Thomas Partey, Agoume could be the next solid shield in front of the defence. His arrival would improve depth and bring a younger profile to the midfield. The move carries some risk. Yet, for a club that values potential and development, Lucien Agoume looks like a smart bet for the future.
