Vaibhav Suryavanshi Will Not Be Playing For Team India Any Time Soon; Here’s Why

Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Why Vaibhav Suryavanshi Cannot Join the Men’s Team Yet: The Age Regulation Stopping a Prodigy

Cricket fans are buzzing right now about 14-year-old sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy this December, he smashed a record-shattering 190 off just 84 balls against Arunachal Pradesh. After that performance, everyone is calling for him to join the national team immediately.

Prominent voices, including Member of Parliament Shashi Tharoor, have joined the conversation. Tharoor took to social media and compared Suryavanshi to the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

He said that the last time a 14-year-old showed this kind of talent, Indian cricket changed forever. Because of this, fans have flooded social media. They want the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to fast-track the Bihar prodigy into the senior men’s T20I squad, maybe even for the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Understanding the ICC Minimum Age Policy for International Cricket – Vaibhav Suryavanshi age eligibility

However, a specific rule stops the selection committee from picking him for the international squad right now. The main hurdle is the ICC Minimum Age Policy. The BCCI follows this rule for all international matches.

The International Cricket Council started this rule in November 2020 to look after young players. It says a cricketer must be at least 15 years old to play international cricket anywhere in the world.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi was born on March 27, 2011, making him 14 years and 9 months old today. Looking at the rule book, he isn’t eligible for a senior international cap yet. The Bihar-born has to wait until his 15th birthday in March 2026.

Why the BCCI Prefers Domestic Cricket Pathways over Special Exemptions?

The ICC rule does let a Member Board ask for special permission to play someone under 15. However, to get that, the board has to prove the player is mentally and physically ready for the pressure of international sports.

Usually, the BCCI likes a steady path and rarely asks for these favours. They want players to prove themselves in domestic cricket, like the Ranji Trophy and India A tours. Suryavanshi has dominated bowlers in the Ranji Plate Group and the U19 Asia Cup. Even so, the selectors usually stick to the standard age rules. This helps them avoid making exceptions too early.

Timeline for Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s T20 World Cup 2026 Eligibility

He can’t play in any bilateral series or selection camps before late March 2026. So, basically, he wasn’t even in contention for the 2026 World Cup squad, as the event kicks off in February. This wait is annoying for fans who want to see him in the blue jersey right away. However, it provides the BCCI with a justifiable reason to protect him. They can keep him away from the intense pressure of international cricket for a few more months.

Rigid Protocols vs. Public Clamour for the Bihar Prodigy

People who want him picked often mention Sachin Tendulkar’s debut at 16. However, they forget that when Tendulkar started, this specific age rule didn’t exist. Today, the rules are strict.

Shashi Tharoor and millions of fans saw his 58-ball century against Australia U19 and his recent Vijay Hazare innings. Despite the noise, the selectors have to follow the calendar. Vaibhav Suryavanshi just has to wait for the clock to tick down. Until March 27, 2026, no amount of runs can make the BCCI ignore the ICC’s global age rule.
