Good signing? 27 G/A forward is a tempting option for Arsenal

Arsenal eye Julián Álvarez but face an uphill battle

Arsenal sit firmly in the race to sign Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez this summer, with the 26-year-old Argentina international openly weighing a move away from Diego Simeone’s side. The Gunners, Barcelona, and Paris Saint-Germain represent the three most concrete offers on the table, according to Mundo Deportivo, though Mikel Arteta’s side face a significant challenge in convincing Álvarez to choose north London.

The striker arrives at this crossroads in exceptional form. He finished Atlético’s season with 19 goals and nine assists across 47 appearances, contributing an 83rd-minute equaliser in their Copa del Rey final victory over Real Sociedad last weekend. Across La Liga alone, he recorded eight goals and four assists in 29 appearances, generating an impressive 7.70 expected goals and 5.13 expected assists, figures that confirm his consistent output at the highest level.

Mundo Deportivo describe Arsenal as “a tempting club for Julián,” yet crucially note he carries no particular desire to return to the Premier League after his Manchester City years. Barcelona’s offer holds the strongest pull, primarily because Álvarez would lead their attack as the clear first-choice striker following Robert Lewandowski’s expected departure. PSG attract him financially and in terms of sporting ambition, though Ligue 1’s reduced global visibility gives him pause.

Álvarez’s contract runs to 2030, and Transfermarkt currently values him at €90 million. Barcelona have set an internal limit of €100 million, hoping Atlético will not demand more. Agent Fernando Hidalgo handles the player’s representation as interest continues building.

Should Arsenal push harder for Álvarez regardless of his reservations?

Arsenal’s recruitment team faces a difficult but revealing decision this window. The real question is not whether Álvarez suits Arsenal tactically; he clearly does, combining intelligent movement, clinical finishing, and the pressing intensity Arteta demands. The deeper question is whether Arsenal should invest close to €100 million in a player whose primary motivation points elsewhere.

Arsenal should pursue the signing assertively, but only with a defined ceiling. Overpaying for a player whose heart sits at Camp Nou risks creating a fractured dynamic from day one. However, if Lewandowski ultimately stays at Barcelona, Álvarez’s preference could shift meaningfully, and Arsenal must be positioned to act swiftly when that clarity arrives.
