Transfer News: Liverpool Target Diomande with Elliott Swap Strategy

Transfer News: Liverpool have identified RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande as their primary summer target as the club prepare life after Mohamed Salah, who has already agreed to leave Anfield a year ahead of his contract expiry. The transfer news, first reported by Paul Joyce of The Times, confirms that sporting director Richard Hughes has actively explored using Harvey Elliott in a cash-plus-player arrangement to reduce Leipzig’s £86 million asking price for the 19-year-old Ivorian.

Diomande delivered 13 goals and 10 assists across 36 appearances during his debut Bundesliga season, arriving from Spanish side Leganes only last summer before immediately establishing himself as one of Europe’s most exciting young wingers.

Diomande completed an average of 3.6 dribbles per 90 minutes, the highest figure in the German top flight throughout 2025/26. Leipzig, naturally, want to retain him and have simultaneously offered a new long-term contract with a release clause inserted.

Transfer News: Elliott’s Role in the Equation

Elliott carries a market valuation of approximately £35 million, meaning a player-plus-cash structure could theoretically reduce Liverpool’s direct outlay to around £51 million. Leipzig had previously pursued Elliott before his loan move to Aston Villa, though they fell short of Liverpool’s valuation at the time, reportedly offering only £20 million. Elliott returned from Villa Park having made just four Premier League appearances, with Unai Emery quickly sidelining him. His Anfield future under Arne Slot looks practically non-existent.

Transfer News: PSG Complicate Liverpool’s Plans

Paris Saint-Germain have entered talks with Diomande’s camp, and according to Fabrizio Romano, the final decision rests with the player himself. Liverpool, therefore, cannot afford prolonged negotiations.

Opinion:

From Liverpool’s perspective, this deal carries a logic that feels almost self-evident. Elliott is surplus to requirements, Leipzig already wanted him, and Diomande fills the exact void Salah leaves behind. Hughes essentially converts a depreciating asset into a discount on a generational talent. The risk sits entirely on Diomande’s end: a 19-year-old choosing between PSG glamour and Liverpool’s rebuilding project. Liverpool’s transfer news landscape this window depends heavily on winning that personal battle first, because the structural deal itself looks entirely workable on paper.
