Transfer news: Manchester United step up pursuit of Mateus Fernandes

Transfer news: Manchester United have emerged as the frontrunners in the race to sign West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes this summer, with the Portuguese youngster understood to be extremely keen on a move to Old Trafford. According to TEAMtalk, INEOS made fresh enquiries for the 21-year-old, escalating what had previously been a background interest into a genuine transfer news priority.

Fernandes scored five goals and provided four assists in 41 outings across all competitions for West Ham this term, establishing himself as one of the best young prospects in the Premier League after joining from Southampton in a deal worth £40 million last summer.

Transfer news rivals shaping the Fernandes race

Paris Saint-Germain made contact with his camp, while Manchester City, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Chelsea are also monitoring developments closely. Arsenal and Liverpool also keep tabs on the midfielder, making this one of the most competitive chases of the summer window. West Ham could charge in the region of £80m to allow him to depart, though that figure could change if the Hammers suffer relegation from the Premier League.

Transfer news: What do United’s midfield need?

With Casemiro leaving and Manuel Ugarte likely to be sold, the Red Devils are looking to revamp their midfield, and Fernandes sits quite high on their wishlist. Casemiro’s departure and a likely exit for Ugarte will leave Kobbie Mainoo as the only natural midfielder, and those in the boardroom want more midfielders, and it is clear Carrick agrees.

My Take:

Does Carrick’s United genuinely need Mateus Fernandes? Straightforwardly, yes. Carrick guided United back to the Champions League and secured a third-place finish, earning a two-year permanent contract today, on 22 May 2026. He now faces a far more demanding season across multiple competitions, and one midfielder, Mainoo, simply is not enough.

Fernandes has the right profile as he is young, progressive, defensively capable, and already proven in the Premier League. The concern is the fee. United reportedly hold a £150m budget for their midfield overhaul and ideally want to sign three new midfielders with that transfer chest. Spending over half of that on one player creates obvious problems elsewhere.

Transfer News: Manchester United lead €30m race for this defender

The realistic scenario is this: if West Ham suffer relegation, the price likely drops considerably and a deal becomes genuinely achievable. If they survive, United may redirect attention to Elliot Anderson or lower-priced alternatives. Fernandes is an excellent footballer, but at £80m-plus, United would need enormous certainty that he fits Carrick’s system immediately, not as a project. Given the queue of elite clubs behind him, hesitating too long makes any deal far harder to complete in the transfer news market this summer.
