Chelsea have completed the signing of Borussia Dortmund star Christian Pulisic for a fee of £58m. The winter transfer window is only a few days old and the Blues have struck an excellent deal with the United States international. Pulisic is set to remain at Dortmund until the end of the season as the Blues have loaned him back to the Germans.
Amidst all of these happening around Chelsea boss, Maurizio Sarri claimed that he had no idea that the club would get the player. Chelsea were underwhelming against Southampton as the clash ended in a 0-0 draw and after the match, the Italian claimed that he was kept in dark about the deal and the ongoing process by the club.
Pulisic became the third highest transfer in the club’s history but the Italian gaffer was unsure about the move until it went through. Sarri claimed that he was consulted about the move a month ago but the former Napoli manager was not sure whether the Blues could rope in the Dortmund youngster.
“I did not know anything about [signing] Pulisic yesterday,” Sarri told the BBC following Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with Southampton.
“They asked my opinion about him one month ago. My opinion was positive and today I knew that the deal is done but I did not know anything.”
The Italian gaffer expressed that he wants less involvement with the transfer business and rather focus on the action taking on the pitch.
“I am not in charge of the market so I have to tend to my matches and play every three days. I can only say my opinion to the club,” Sarri said.
Chelsea sacked Sarri’s predecessor, Antonio Conte as the Blues board failed to rope in the targets set by Conte. The former Juventus boss fell out of favour at the Bridge and hence left the club after spending two seasons in West London.
Sarri is pretty different to what Conte was and the former Napoli gaffer is pretty happy with the club hierarchy taking control of all the transfer business. While the Italian can happily take charge of the things happening on the field.
Was The Right Decision Made By The West London Outfit?
It was great from Chelsea to strike a deal with a player like Christian Pulisic’s charisma and potential. The Blues did loan him back to Dortmund for the rest of the season. This decision was criticised and rightly so, Chelsea have been struggling to net goals and there is immense pressure on their talisman Eden Hazard to bail them out every time. Players like Alvaro Morata, Willian and Olivier Giroud misfiring, Christian Pulisic could have literally kick-started their season again.
The 20-year old could have added the extra edge that Sarri’s Chelsea is missing at the moment. The Blues are coming off from an underwhelming 0-0 against Southampton which reduced their gap with Manchester United to only six points. So with games coming thick and fast and the top four competition getting intense, Pulisic could have been that piece of the puzzle which Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea are missing this season.
The injuries and the upcoming high-stakes fixtures might see the Londoners in trouble, unless and until they react quickly in the current transfer window. There is a serious need to add more strength to their existing squad and the time to do so is now itself.
If they delay once again, it could cost them big time and that is something that the club’s board and higher officials will surely not want.
