Manchester City are keeping close tabs on Eintracht Frankfurt forward, Luka Jovic to bolster their striking options in the summer transfer window next season. The 21-year old has scored 21 goals and 7 assists in 31 matches for the Eagles in all competitions this season. The Serbian striker also leads the Bundesliga scoring charts with 15 goals in 21 matches scoring at a superb 0.71 ratio, two goals more than Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski who is in the second position for the Bundesliga golden boot race.
Jovic was a revelation under former boss Niko Kovac as Frankfurt clinched the German Cup last season beating the German giants Bayern Munich. The Serbian has continued his good run of form from last season under new boss Adi Hutter and has developed a deadly partnership between French forward Sebastian Haller and Croatian winger Ante Rebic. The trio is one of the deadliest in Europe this season.
Jovic has attracted interest from various European clubs and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are one of the top suitors for the forward. The list also includes Guardiola’s former team FC Barcelona, who are looking at him as a long term replacement for Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez who is on the wrong side of thirty and struggling to score consistently.
The Serbian joined Frankfurt on loan from Portuguese side SL Benfica back in 2017 and the Eagles now intend to trigger his £6m clause in his contract eventually selling at the end of the season.
The reigning Premier League champions have been watching him closely as the scouts follow Frankfurt’s matches regularly for some months now. Manchester City have their talisman Sergio Aguero and Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus fighting for one position though there have been injury concerns leaving the Spanish tactician short on plans.
Adding to his goalscoring prowess the 21-year old Serbian is extremely versatile and can even play as in a no. 10 role and even on either flank should Guardiola intend to use him in that position. He is primarily a lone striker.
Jovic always had a knack of finding the back of the net as the Serbian international became boyhood club Red Star Belgrade’s youngest goalscorer till date at the mere at of 16. He is also the only player in the German Bundesliga history to score five goals in a single fixture, as Frankfurt faced Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Manchester City are known for their scouting network as they are always on the lookout for new, talented players all across the world and Jovic is someone who tops their wish-list. However the Serbian is someone who goes beyond than just being in the long list of youngsters. The 21-year is an exceptional two-footed player and his mixture of pace and physical prowess makes him a threat for any opposition.
The Citizens are also looking to buy a central midfielder and a left back in the summer transfer window but Luka Jovic still remains a top target for the reigning Premier League champions, with Olympique Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele and Leicester City left-back Ben Chilwell the primary targets for Pep Guardiola’s side for the respective positions.
However, the fact of the matter is that, the player is also a key target for Chelsea and Liverpool as well and he can add some much needed quality to any top side. The Blues and Reds would like to have an additional striker amongst their ranks and this can be the player for them too (depending on Chelsea’s transfer ban).
