According to the latest reports, Premier League giants Manchester United have been eyeing up a move to sign Norwich City defender Ben Godfrey in the upcoming summer transfer window. The young centre-back has been impressive for the Canaries and is being monitored by the top clubs in the country.
Manchester United fans were keen on this season getting over as soon as possible when it was announced that Jose Mourinho would again be in-charge of the club this season. The 56-year-old instilled a very defensive philosophy into United and it was something that the fans were not used to seeing on a regular basis. Mourinho’s football lacked conviction and was lethargic in attack and with dire football and no results, the writing was on the wall for the ‘Special One’. A 3-1 humiliation at the hands of fierce rivals Liverpool back in December was the final nail in the coffin for Mourinho and United decided to part ways with him just a few days later.
The Red Devils then turned to a familiar face in the form of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to take over the reins at least until the end of the season to add some stability and carry the ship forward. However, Solskjaer has exceeded expectations since taking over, winning 14 of his first 19 games in charge of the club. The 46-year-old also guided United to the quarterfinals of the Champions League after a dramatic win over Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint Germain earlier this month. United turned around a 2-0 deficit to win 3-1 at the Parc Des Princes in incredible fashion with plenty of injuries to most of their first team members.
United are also competing for a top 4 berth in order to play Champions League football next season, as well, and Solskjaer has been implying the culture of the club to play positive and attacking football. This has earned the Norwegian a permanent job for Manchester United and Solskjaer will now look into the summer transfer window to bring in re-enforcements to build on his squad.
Godfrey To United?
The Red Devils are keen to bolster their back line and are in the mood to sign a high-quality defender to challenge for silverware in the near future. If reports are to be believed, United are now targeting Norwich City defender Ben Godfrey, who is turning heads at the Championship level. Godfrey emerged from Norwich’s youth system and has broken into the first team this season with his first senior league start coming against Bolton. The 21-year-old star has been rock solid in defence for the Canaries and his three goals and two assists have helped them to the top of the Championship table as well.

Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are nowhere near consistent enough and Eric Bailey looks like he will be making a move for fresh arrivals at Manchester United. Godrey is currently valued at £10m but if Norwich wins the Championship and make it into the Premier League, his market value will rise tremendously. United will have competition from fierce rivals Liverpool in the hunt to snap up Godfrey.
