According to the latest reports, Premier League giants Liverpool are looking to lure Inter Milan star forward Mauro Icardi to Anfield in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Argentine hitman has been linked with a move away from the San Siro and could be sold for a transfer fee of just £52m, which is a relatively low price for a player of his caliber.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool is currently enjoying their best season in the Premier League ever since the club formed back in 1892. The Reds sit at the summit of England’s top flight division and are two points ahead of second-placed Manchester City. Although Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City still have a game in hand, Liverpool have done exceedingly well to stay in close contention until this stage of the season. Manchester City broke multiple records when they stormed their way to the Premier League title last season, amassing a staggering 100 points in the process. Liverpool are ensuring that they fight right until the end of the season this term to allow the title race to go down until the wire.
Most recently, Liverpool defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday to earn a crucial three more points and pile the pressure back on the blue half of Manchester. The front three for Liverpool have not managed to hit the heights of last season but each one of them has contributed when it has mattered and helped the club to where they are at the moment. Liverpool are also in the quarterfinals of the Champions League and have taken another step forward in the hunt for continental success as they defeated FC Porto 2-0 last Tuesday in the first leg of the tie.
However, if Liverpool fail to win any silverware this season, Jurgen Klopp will look towards another option of possibly signing a goal-scoring centre-forward instead of using Roberto Firmino as a false nine in the striker’s position. One player that the German boss is targeting in the summer is Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi, whose future at the San Siro looks uncertain, to say the least. The 26-year-old is one of the most prolific attackers in Europe at the moment and in 212 appearances for the Serie A club, Icardi has scored 123 goals and notched up a further 27 assists.
The issue does not lie with the ability of the player but rather with his behavior, according to Inter Milan. Icardi was stripped of his captaincy back in February after he refused to sign a contract extension with the Italian club. Icardi is surely one of the best goalscorers around as even this season he has scored 16 times and reports claim that he could leave Inter for a transfer fee of just £52 million in the summer as the Italian club have had enough of his antics.
La Liga giants Real Madrid are also keeping tabs on Icardi as they look for a proper finisher in front of goal but Liverpool should also find themselves in the hunt for the star forward who can take the club to the next level.
