The summer transfer window is drawing to a close and it’s going to be a very busy one for Arsenal. The Gunners are having a number of positions to fill up as they look to clear up and bring in fresh faces. They also have a number players who’ll be free agents this summer with Welsh international Aaron Ramsey already agreeing a deal with Juventus. English international Danny Welbeck is a subject matter of contract discussion at The Emirates as the club is on the verge of offering an extension to the striker.
He joined in from Manchester United for €20m but his tally of 16 Premier League goals in 88 appearances have never made a fan favourite. Injuries at regular intervals have halted his career progress and he has been unlucky from that aspect. However, the club management are of the opinion that he still has more to offer for the Arsenal jersey and hence the decision of offering him a new contract as per the English news outlet Daily Mirror. He started the season on a very positive note under new manager Unai Emery and scored 5 times and assisted 1 more in 14 appearances across all competitions before he got suffered an ankle injury which has sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
The news was not received by the supporters in a positive manner and there has been criticism of the decision in social media. The fans were grateful for his services but they do not want to see him next season in Arsenal colours as the news of contract extension caused surprise and a degree of annoyance in them.
“Arsenal need to lower the wage structure, he is always injured, it makes no sense to keep him,” Tweeted one.
“This would be absolutely pointless,” surmised another.
A third person posted: “We will never progress as a club if we continue with mediocre decisions. Let the man go.”
“Versatile sure but that only matters when he’s fit to play,” another fan suggested. “I don’t see a reason to go through with this.”
The comments only got more sharper with each passing fan.
“He is a waste of space,” brutally analysed another fan.
“Injury prone, not a great goal scorer, doesn’t create enough assists. His Arsenal career hasn’t exactly been great.”
It was widely expected that Danny would be moving on to a new club next summer with the likes of Everton, Newcastle United and West Ham United reportedly keeping close tabs on his progress from injury.
It is likely though that the club might keep him for the time being as a backup to Aubameyang and Lacazette as the club will try to bring in players to fill in other gaps in the squad and they apparently have a restraint on the net spend amount this summer. Arsenal are in the need of defenders, a winger and also a replacement for the outgoing Aaron Ramsey and these are the priorities and henceforth they are thinking of offering Welbeck an extension which might suit both parties in the long run.
