England defeated Australia in the third test to stay alive in the Ashes after Ben Stokes came up with a heroic last-wicket stand with spinner Jack Leach and chased down the mammoth target of 359 set by the Aussies. The Three Lions were in a spot of bother after a shambolic batting performance in the first innings where they got out for 67 runs handing Australia the driver’s seat in the crucial game. However, the English allrounder held his fort and scored an outstanding 135 off 219 balls and levelled the series 1-1 for England. Stokes was running out of partners until Jack Leach came on and supported him.

The 28-year old from Somerset is known for his spin bowler but he showed his mettle with the willow when England was in danger and he scored heroic 92 against Ireland earlier in the summer. He replicated that batting form against Australia, though he scored only one run he was resolute with his defence facing fast bowlers like James Pattinson and Pat Cummins.

Leach was seen polishing his glasses time and again during his 76 run last-wicket partnership with Stokes.  The English allrounder shared a light moment after the game as he tweeted ” Jack Leach….. Specsavers do yourself a favour and give him free glasses for life”.

However after the tweet Specsavers a British multinational optical chain has granted Stokes wish to offer the Somerset spinner glasses for life.

“We can confirm we will offer Jack Leach free glasses for life,” they replied to the Stokes Tweet.

Leach himself spoke to the media after the game explaining his actions between the match with his glasses. He said:  “I had to make sure my glasses were clean. I know I look stupid when I am out there but it got the job done.”

However England hero Ben Stokes spoke to BBC after they won the third test and admitted that he was scared to look at his partner, Leach bat as they got close to the target.

“It has not quite sunk in, I know we have won the game but I am pretty tired. A great day. We came into the day with a chance but it is never over until it is over.”

“At nine down with 70 left it was obvious what was to be done. I only got
nervous when we were down below 10 needed but I had my pitching wedge at a perfect length.

“I could not look when Jack Leach was batting. I was just waiting for the reaction of the crowd! It is amazing. The pressure Jack was under, he faced a crucial 15-odd ball. Leachy had to stay in there – he has got some serious balls.”

With the summer that Stokes has been having, things are looking really good for him. He has not only helped the team lift the World Cup title for the first time ever but has been one of the best stars for them. His contribution in the last few years has taken English cricket to its pinnacle. He surely deserves to be “knighted” someday in the future.
