Why Shakib Al Hasan Is Banned After Failing To Report A Bookie Approach Is Not Really Justified

The Story About The Ban- Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan has been banned by ICC for two years from all forms of cricket. That is with one year of that sentence suspended today by the media release. Amid many controversies in the last three-four days, ICC bans Shakib to take part in cricket further.

The story comes, as he failed to report corrupt approaches made by bookies. That was three different times in Tri-series between Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Further, he also failed to do the same during the 2018 Indian Premier League.

ICC confirmed that Shakib accepted all three charges on him. If he satisfies the conditions of the ICC in an initial one-year suspension. He has been asked to participate in rehabilitation programmes. Shakib will be free to resume all forms of cricket on 29 October 2020.

The Story That Is The Talk Of The Town Regarding Shakib Al Hasan Currently

Shakib failed to inform ICC Anti-Corruption Unit about the bookie approach in relation to Sunrisers Hyderabad versus Kings XI Punjab match in 2018 IPL on April 26, 2018, another two in Tri-series in January 2018. Shakib accepted the charges and said, “I am obviously extremely sad to have been banned from the game I love but I completely accept my sanction for not reporting the approaches.

Like the majority of players and fans around the world, I want Cricket to be a corruption-free sport and I am looking forward to working with the ICC ACU team to support their education programme and ensure young players do not make the same mistakes I did.”

Shakib Al Hasan appeals for leave to cut short his DPL stint

Shakib was at the forefront of the players’ strike for their eleven demands from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). BCB accepted all demands without giving any details of the hike and other demands.

Shakib did not take part in the practice session of the team for the last two days. So some rumours that he will not take part in the India tour were going around in the last two days. BCB President Nazmul Hassan claimed that there is a conspiracy of players that they will pull out at the last minute. That is when the flight will depart to India.

In the wake of these uncertainties, the ban on Shakib is a major setback for the Bangladesh Cricket team. It comes after his tremendous form in World Cup 2019. After the huge upset in Test loss against Afghanistan, many controversies surrounded the skipper Shakib and Bangladesh Cricket.

In his absence and with opener Tamim Iqbal pulling out from the India tour, senior-most player Mushfiqar Rahim might lead the team in Tests. Mahmudullah Riyadh might be captain in T20 Internationals. The 32-year-old Shakib will have to endure a difficult time ahead to start international cricket again in 2020.

India tour is a major assignment for Bangladesh in November, with the new BCCI president Saurav Ganguly confirming the date and venue for the first-ever Day-Night Test between the two nations in Kolkata. The dominance of India in-home Tests is a foremost challenge Bangladesh has to face in absence of their most experienced player Shakib And Tamim Iqbal in November.

Not A Good Call?

If Shakib was possibly a non-Asian player (some may believe), the punishment probably would have been lesser than what he has received now. Remembering the fact that David Warner and Steve Smith received the ban of just a single year. That was for their ball-tampering incident and were back before the World Cup.

Is cheating on the cricket field, a smaller crime than not reporting a potential bookie? Don’t think so. Yet the fact that Shakib is from Bangladesh. He is not some major cricketing country (as per ICC) that could play a part in the decision of the jury. The true cricketing fans will be really annoyed by the decision. They will not be able to see one of the most gifted Bangladeshi cricketers and top all-rounders in the world at present, play for a couple of years. Doesn’t really make sense.
