Cesar Azpilicueta and Petr Cech send a good luck message to Mourinho after the former Chelsea boss took over as the new Tottenham manager. The former Blues and Manchester United manager was still looking for a new challenge. It seems that he has now found it in north London.
Though Mourinho was being linked with a job at the Emirates, he decided to take over at Spurs. Either one of the jobs may not have gone down well with the fans of his former club. However, Tottenham is surely one of the most hated clubs in England.
The message sent out by Cech and Azpilicueta was similar. It read out as, “I wish him all the best even though he goes to a rival.”
When asked to manage Tottenham Hotspur back in 2015, Mourinho had refused to do so without any second thoughts. It was his connection with The Blues that kept the former Manchester United manager away from arch-rivals Spurs and close to millions of Chelsea fans.
However, this sudden move as the new Tottenham Hotspur boss has surely harmed his equation with the Stamford Bridge faithful. The 56-year-old main-man won three Premier League titles in his two stints as Chelsea manager. More than mere victories, ‘The Special One’ earned tremendous respect and unconditional love at that club.
“That was before I was sacked,” is what Jose said when questioned about his stand years back. The former Portuguese coach was only sacked by Chelsea in 2015 when the side struggled at the 16th position of the league table. Later he managed Manchester United before being sacked by the Red Devils last year. Now as the successor Mauricio Pochettino, Mourinho will face The Blues next month. That will surely be a heck of a match not only for the players but also for Spurs boss.
Despite the bitterness, Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta and Petr Cech (technical and performance advisor) wished him luck while interacting with Sky sports.
“I can talk only when Jose was here at Chelsea with us,” said Azpilicueta. “We won trophies, and now football moves on. I wish him all the best even though he goes to a rival. I have good memories with him and I have played many times under him and against him. Obviously, when we play against each other we both want to win for our teams – but this is football. I wish him well,” the defender said.
“He is a great manager and obviously it is great for the Premier League to welcome back one of the most successful managers of the past 15 years, so obviously we wish him well,” added Cech.
Both of these wished Mourinho luck but will surely want to defeat Tottenham Hotspur when the two sides lock horns on the 22nd of December, 2019. With that being said, the two teams will be involved in the race to finish in the top four.
Jose Mourinho conducted his first practice season, with Lloris leading Spurs on Wednesday. They faced West Ham on Saturday and earned a hard-fought 3-2 win over their London rivals.
