An Open Letter To Gautam Gambhir About His “Salty Tweet” On World Cup 2011 And MS Dhoni

2nd April– The day is very special for every citizen of a cricket-loving nation like India. On this day, nine years ago India has won their second one-day World Cup title at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir were two of the heroes for this massive triumphant that the whole nation celebrated.

On this special occasion, ESPN Cricinfo posted a picture of Mahendra Singh Dhoni with the caption,

#OnThisDay in 2011, the shot that sent millions of Indians into jubilation.

The post never meant that the shot was the sole reason behind our World Cup triumph in 2011. Gautam Gambhir, you were one of my favourites throughout your playing career. However, your comments these days are utterly disgraceful. You were always given the credits you deserved. (Except a few blind Dhoni fans). According to me, both innings were equally important on that night. India was struggling at 114-3 when Mahendra Singh Dhoni came into the crease.

One more wicket in these circumstances would have created enormous pressure on team India in front of the crowd of Wankhede. The partnership between Gambhir and Dhoni-led team India to an extent from where 130 million Indians were able to keep the hope of winning the World Cup.

Gautam Gambhir reveals how MS Dhoni denied him his hundred in ...

Every sport is a collective effort except a few. There are a few moments which stay as the match-defining moment. For every Indian, the six of Mahendra Singh Dhoni has remained as the defining moment which gave India the World Cup. Gautam Gambhir’s knock of 97 is still there in talks whenever the Final of 2011 comes in our mind. Without that knock, the story of the final could have been different. So, stop your self-obsession and move on man.

A biopic has been made on the life of MS Dhoni but it does not mean that you will always have that inferiority complex. Yes, you have always wanted to be the captain of team India. However, we should accept the fact that all can’t be achieved in one life. You have several glorious moments in the cricket field and you should be proud of those moments.

Maybe, you wished to play one more World Cup before your retirement. However, fitness would certainly be an issue for you in the 2014 World Cup. Also, the new opening pair of Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma needed a certain amount of time to settle in the Indian team.

As a fan of Kolkata Knight Riders, I always loved your aggression as the captain. Our team needed a leader like you. The management of Kolkata Knight Riders brought you in the squad in 2011. Under your leadership, we went to the playoffs for the first time in the history of Indian Premier League. After that, Kolkata Knight Riders won two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. You were brilliant throughout your IPL career for Kolkata Knight Riders. You didn’t even think twice to drop yourself when you were in off form. The fans of Kolkata Knight Riders would love to cherish those memories any day.

So, please stop this nonsense. Stay positive.

An earnest request from one of your fans who followed your batting style since his childhood.
