Dale Steyn Reveals Ian Gould’s Secret About Sachin Tendulkar And His First Double Hundred

Sachin Tendulkar

We all know that Sachin Tendulkar is the first batsman to score a double century in ODI’s In 2010. He played a gem of an innings against South Africa in Gwalior. The knock turned out to be his best score in ODI’s. Sachin smashed all the South Africa bowlers all around the park. It turned out to be a day to for forget for Dale Steyn and co.

After 10 years, Dale Steyn spoke about this sensational knock from Sachin Tendulkar. He revealed that umpire Ian Gould committed a blunder on one occasion and gave him Not Out. Sachin made use of his luck and score the double century.

Dale Steyn was recently part of a Sky Sports podcast with James Anderson. He praised the Master Blaster for scoring lots of runs against his team. However, he recalled that he trapped Tendulkar plumb in front of the wickets in his 190s, only for the appeal to get turned down by Ian Gould.

What Gould Said About Sachin Tendulkar And The Dismissal

Before and after: The numbers show how Sachin Tendulkar's 200 ...

“He [Tendulkar] did score a lot of runs against us. He scored the first double-hundred in ODI cricket, and it was against us in Gwalior. And I remember – I think I got him out lbw when he was about 190-odd. Gouldy [Ian Gould] was the umpire, and he gave him not out,” said Steyn.

“If I gave him out, I would not make it back to the hotel”,- Ian Gould.

“And I was like, ‘why, why did you give him not out!? That is so dead.’ And he was like, ‘mate, look around – if I gave him out, I would not make it back to the hotel.”

However, Dale Steyn took it on a lighter note. He lauded Sachin Tendulkar’s career and praised how builds his innings and how he treats a ball. “Especially in a place like India. You bowl a bad bowl, and he hits you four – he is on nought and he hits you for four in Mumbai, it feels like the world is closing in on you. He is only on four not out, he may as well have been on 500,” he added.

Riding on Tendulkar’s double hundred, Team India posted a massive total of 401/3 in the given 50 overs. Dinesh Karthik and captain MS Dhoni ably supported him and scored half-centuries each. South Africa lost all their wickets for just 248 runs in 42.5 overs. India won the match by 153 runs.

Eventually, Rohit Sharma Did It Thrice

Though Sachin was obviously the first one to do it, Rohit Sharma did it more times. The Mumbai Indians’ skipper crossed the 200-mark three times, which is the highest number of double hundreds by any player in ODIs.

Sharma has proven that he scores runs for fun. This is why he is one of the most highly-rated batters in the world. Hopefully, we can see more of the Indian cricketer in the days to come. The T20 World Cup might actually happen next year now. The fans will be waiting to see their favourite players return back to the pitch soon.
