According to the latest reports, former England ace turned pundit Alan Shearer has said that Chelsea have to qualify for the Champions League next season. This is if they are to satiate new arrival, Timo Werner. The Red Bull Leipzig forward is ready to become the latest addition to the arsenal of the west London club. However, as per Shearer, the German ace will expect to play in the Champions League on a regular basis. The Blues will have to strive to keep their spot among the top four intact. This is when the Premier League season resumes on June 17.
Chelsea have made superb breakthroughs ahead of the restart of the 2019-20 season. They have done well in terms of strengthening the attacking aspect of their squad. This is due to the fact of having brought in attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech from Ajax. The attacker will join the club in summer.
Now, with the imminent acquisition of a heavyweight forward like Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, gaffer Frank Lampard will have his eyes set on the prize in the next term. He will want to win at both the domestic as well as the European levels.
How Does The Werner Factor Impact Chelsea?
For that, however, the Blues will have to ensure that they retain their spot among the top four clubs in the Premier League. They are currently standing in the fourth spot on the Premier League table, three points clear of their arch-rivals Manchester United, who are in the fifth spot at the moment. So it is going to be a tough fight for the fourth spot when the season resumes the next week.
Timo Werner has been a revelation in the Bundesliga this season so far. He has already taken his tally to 25 goals for the 2019-20 season alongside dishing out eight assists so far. The 24-year-old forward is one of the hot prospects in Europe and Chelsea are almost successful in their pursuit to add this German hotshot to their lineup for the next season.
What Shearer Told The Sun?
“Signing Timo Werner is a huge statement from Chelsea – but it would be a kick in the teeth not to make the top four now. Along with Hakim Ziyech, they have got two big-hitters through the door before the transfer window has opened.
“I am certain there will be more to come, too, with Ben Chilwell also on their radar. But these players will all be expecting to play in the Champions League next season, so it is imperative they get the job done.
“With a three-point cushion in fourth, it would be a real anti-climax if they did not, considering the talent on the way in.”
How Liverpool Lost Out On The Star Player
Liverpool, however, were ahead of Chelsea in the race to bring Werner to their club but gave up on their prospect to sign the RB Leipzig forward at the very last moment. Chelsea took the opportunity with both hands and met Leipzig’s valuation of £53m for their star player to bolster their attack for the next term. Reportedly, Lampard is also looking to strengthen his defensive ranks and is looking to add England left-back Ben Chilwell from Leicester City, who has been a brilliant performer under the tutelage of former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers so far this season.
With players like Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Billy Gilmour in their ranks, who have been performing exceptionally well this season so far, the addition of players like Werner and Ziyech will undoubtedly add more flair to the Chelsea forward line. However, Frank Lampard will be well aware of the arduous task that he has in his hands and will surely look to turn his young brigade into a consistently performing unit, which they have lacked so far this season, so as to ensure a Champions League spot ahead of the next season.
