New Chelsea Signing Will Be A Big Hit In England, Believes Former Team-Mate

Timo Werner

The Chelsea Update- Yussuf Poulsen believes his former RB Leipzig teammate will be one of the best strikers in the Premier League in the coming years. Despite that, he added that it will need some time. Timo Werner became the second Chelsea signing under Frank Lampard after the Blues captured Ajax playmaker Hakim Ziyech a few months back. The 24-year-old German striker signed a five-year contract with the Blues and has landed in England with big expectations. Chelsea has struggled big time in this season and scoring goals have not been fluent even against weaker opponents.

Due to the transfer ban they had last year, Lampard could not sign any new players to his squad and opted to promote Chelsea academy youngsters into the first team. Tammy Abraham has been good this season considering his first season in English top-flight but it is a no doubt he won’t be the first choice striker at Stamford Bridge next season following Werner’s arrival.

What Poulsen said in an interview with Sport-Informations-Dienst (SID) about the new Chelsea signing?

“I think Timo will be a great striker in the Premier League over the next few years.”

“Of course, he has to get to know his team-mates and the league first; you can not show all your qualities right away. But that will come in time.”

Bundesliga | Yussuf Poulsen: the rise of RB Leipzig's battering ram striker from third division to Bundesliga

Poulsen, now 26, has got a big chance to be a big player and prove himself more at RB Leipzig. The Denmark international has spent already seven years at the Bundesliga club and says there is time for him to think about his next movement but at the moment he is happy.

“At some point, I will definitely try something different, but I am only 26 years old and at the moment I am very happy in Leipzig.”

“If I had planned my career 10 years ago, I would certainly not have earmarked seven years in Leipzig, but I have been here that long now. When I signed, I had not even heard of Leipzig!”

What he said of the Champions League Final 8 mini-tournament?

Poulsen was asked about Leipzig’s chances in the Champions League this season. They are in the quarter-finals of this year’s competition after a commanding victory over Tottenham in the round-of-16 stage.

“Once you are there, you have the firm desire to go all the way to the final and win the title.”

“Sure, there are teams with a better chance on paper, but in football, there are always surprises.”

Rio Ferdinand - Wikipedia

What Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand stated about Hakim Ziyech?

The defender believes Chelsea have made a good business after adding two top-class players like Ziyech and Werner in their ranks. He also sees Ziyech as a similar player as Riyad Mahrez for Manchester City but with more creativity.

“We watched Ziyech last season for Ajax, he was magnificent. He reminds me a little bit of Mahrez but he crosses the ball a little bit more. He is someone who is really always trying to find a way to unlock defences with his delivery. A lot of guile.”

“Timo Werner, his movement and his finishing are phenomenal, we saw what he was like against Spurs in London. So that is two talented players who will definitely improve them.”
