Watch: Jasprit Bumrah Takes His First Test Wicket In India

Jasprit Bumrah

Indian spearhead Jasprit Bumrah dismissed England’s Daniel Lawrence – catching him leg before wicket– to claim his first Test wicket on home soil. Bumrah, who made his Test debut back in 2018, bowled his first ball in India, three years later as Joe Root and company start their tour at the M Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Friday.

The Video Of The First Wicket For Jasprit Bumrah On Home Soil That Went Viral

On the other hand Daniel Lawrence – a newfound English talent – saw his first Indian tour set off on a ‘duck’ note. It was only after Rory Burns played off his wicket attempting an unnecessary and ambitious reverse sweep off Ashwin that brought Lawrence in the middle.

Seeing a newbie batsman, skipper Virat Kohli – instead of continuing with Ravichandran Ashwin – handed the ball to Bumrah. In the fourth delivery on his spell back to the attack, the pacer kept it full and tailing into the right-hander to beat him by sheer pace. It was a plumb middle stump hitting the ball and Bumrah celebrated first and asked for confirmation from Nitin Menon later. Lawrence’s five-ball stay ended as he wasn’t able to score his first runs in India.

While most appreciated Jasprit for the wicket, the commentators and experts made sure that Virat Kohli got his share of pats, given his move to bring back the pacer when Ashwin had just taken a wicket, paid off.

What Next For Jasprit Bumrah And Co. As We Head Into This Game

Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah missed a chance to claim his first wicket at home on the first ball of the innings, when Rishabh Pant dropped a catch. Then it was a firm opening stand between Dominic Sibley and Rory Burns, who together stitched 63 runs in 24 overs. Occasional boundaries and careful placement saw the two get rid of the opening spell by Ishant Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. Kohli didn’t delay bringing Ashwin in as soon as he realised that the pitch had nothing for the pacers.

Except for a ball or two, Ravi Ashwin wasn’t getting much help. So, wasn’t his partner for the Test match- Shabaz Nadeem. However, considering the excellent batting nature of the pitch, getting two wickets could be considered as a good enough session for India. It was English skipper Joe Root and Dominic Sibley who came back. They resumed the game post-lunch. Root marks the 100th Test match of his career.

Can Team India Get A Few Quick Wickets And Take The Advantage Now?

After the positive start, England has lost a couple of wickets already. They have just crossed the 100-run mark. However, they will want to post a huge score to grab the advantage. It will not be easy to do that against this Indian bowling attack.

Despite that, Team India will need a few more quick wickets. That is because the visitors bat deep. It will be up to Jasprit Bumrah and co. to lead by example. Let’s see if they can get more wickets and shift the tide in their team’s favour.
