Indian skipper Virat Kohli was seen asking Nitin Menon to ask Jofra Archer to not run in the middle of the pitch during England’s second innings on Day 4. Kohli – who knew every run was piling to India’s misery – said that Archer was even running the easy singles on the restricted area.

The captain told the Indian umpire Nitin Menon: “Oye Menon, Seedhe run bhi beech mein bhad raha hai yaar kya hye.” (Translation: “Hey menon, he is running in the middle of the pitch”).
According to the laws of the game (ICC approved), a bowler or a batsman is not allowed to run on the protected area. Batsmen must use the side or the outside of the pitch to complete the runs, whereas bowlers’ follow-through shouldn’t breach the middle of the pitch. This rule ensures the protection of the area where the ball normally bounces. Footmarks and spikes can damage or alter the pitch.
After asking India to chase a 420 run mark, England asked Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma to come out in the last session of Day 4. The latter of the duo fell down to Jack Leach’s turn. However, England picked up India on Day 5 where they left the batsmen.

The English spearhead castled Ajinkya Rahane and dismissed Rishabh Pant for cheap in his first session spell. Jack Leach picked four wickets – the highest for England in the fourth innings. Anderson finished with three as Archer, Bess and Stokes came back with one wicket each.

Talking about what went wrong, Kohli said, “Our body language and intensity was not up to the mark. Second innings we were much better. We were better in the second half of the first innings with the bat. Not the first four batters. We have to understand the things that we have done decently in this game. The things that we have not and as a side, we are always looking to improve. England was far more professional and consistent throughout the Test match than we were.”
