Watch: Jasprit Bumrah Debut IPL Wicket Dismissing Virat Kohli

India

It was on April 4 in 2013, that Jasprit Bumrah made his Indian Premier League debut for the Mumbai Indians. Eight years later one can only realize how important a cog the Baroda pacer has become for the Mumbai and Indian bowling unit. It was an evening match – the second one in the league – in 2013 that Bangalore locked horns with Mumbai at the M Chinnaswamy stadium. While the evening might be better remembered for the explosive unbeaten 92 of Chris Gayle, on paper, Bumrah was revealed to the world.

The Video Of Jasprit Bumrah Dismissing Virat Kohli As His First IPL Wicket

Coming to bowl his first over at the big stage, with Virat Kohli – arguably the best batsmen then – on strike, Jasprit Bumrah was hit for three boundaries in the first four deliveries of the over. His odd slinging action made a feast for Kohli. However, on the fifth ball, Bumrah managed to find the RCB skipper leg before wicket, with his natural angle finding a plumb and Virat became his first victim. Bumrah’s 100th IPL wicket is also Kohli, the feat he achieved in the last season of the tournament.

Bowling alongside Mitchell Johnson and Lasith Malinga, Bumrah was pretty under the shadows in 2013. It was as the Mumbai Indians went on to win their maiden IPL title that year. As the 27-year-old pacer has referred many times, it was Lasith Malinga who helped him carry the yorker torch over the years. Although Bumrah returned with the figures of 3/32, he only played two matches in that season. He went wicketless in his second game.

It was from 2014, under Rohit Sharma’s full-time captaincy that Bumrah became a regular and eventually lead the bowling attack to four more IPL titles.

What Now For Bumrah Ahead Of The IPL 2021 Tournament; Can He Do Good Yet Again?

Three years after making his IPL debut, Bumrah made his India debut against Australia. That was in an ODI in 2013. The 27-year-old has played 67 ODIs and 50 T20Is for the country. He has bagged a total of 167 wickets in the white-ball format. In 19 Tests so far, he picked 83 wickets including five 5-wicket hauls.

IPL 2018: Mumbai Indians' Jasprit Bumrah raring to go after 'much-needed break'

He recorded a 4/14 in the IPL last year. He was able to accumulate 27 wickets – both being his best figures over the years. His ability to choke the opposition in the death and claim crucial wickets at important junctures makes him an asset any franchise would be desperate to have.

After missing the two Test matches and then the limited over series against England, Bumrah – who is newly-wed – will be seen in action in IPL 2021 from April 9. This will be the most T20 cricket he will play heading into the World Cup at home later this year.

The IPL starts on the 9th of April. The Mumbai Indians will be playing Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in the opener.
