Two Chelsea players have made a unique record in football history as they have become the only players to win The UEFA Champions League, UEFA Euro and the UEFA Super Cup in the same year. Jorginho and Emerson surely had the best year in their career this term when the duo achieved three major European winner’s medals in three months. Jorginho in particular is the only player who played in all three finals.
Chelsea defeated Unai Emery’s Villareal by penalties with the Super Cup this month after the game ended 1-1 after extra time. Jorginho came on as a substitute in the second half of the game and also scored a crucial spot-kick in the shootout. Emerson however was an unused sub.
Kepa Arrizabalaga became a Chelsea hero on the night when he saved two penalties in the shootout after coming on replacing Edouard Mendy just before the final whistle of the extra time. Chelsea finally won the UEFA Super Cup after 23 years after their failed attempts in 2012, 2013 and in 2019.
Emerson joins Lyon on loan from Chelsea
After winning the treble of European cups in three months with Chelsea and Italy, the left-back has left Stamford Bridge this summer to join French Ligue 1 club Lyon on loan after extending his contract to 2023. Emerson could not secure his place at Chelsea in the first XI in his three-year spell so far with the team managers always preferred Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso ahead of him. First team football at Lyon can help him build his reputation and possibly another chance next season at Chelsea.
Chelsea star Jorginho believes him winning Ballon d’Or would be a ‘scandal’
After making serious contributions to his club and country’s success in the summer, Jorginho has a great chance to win the Ballon D’or this year. His teammate Antonio Cassano revealed that Jorginho concurred with his opinion. They agreed that it would be a ‘scandal’ if the Chelsea midfielder won the Ballon d’Or ahead of Lionel Messi.
While speaking to Christian Vieri on his Twitch channel, Cassano said, “Remember when I said any journalist who voted for Jorginho as Ballon d’Or should have his licence taken away? Well, I was in Formentera. Was with my family and just as I sat down, I felt a touch. ‘Antonio, you are great!’ the voice says.”
“I turn around to ask who he was. He took off his glasses and mask and it was Jorginho! I told him, Jorgi, can you believe the scandal if they should give you the Ballon d’Or and not to Messi? He replied that he absolutely agreed with me. Messi should always win it.”
Jorginho’s response to the prospect of winning the Ballon d’Or
“We all have dreams. Will be honest, it depends on the criteria that the decision is based on. If we are talking about talent, then I know am not the best in the world. If it is going on titles, then nobody has won more than I have this season. How could I compare myself to Messi, Neymar or even Cristiano Ronaldo? They have got completely different characteristics to me. But, again, it depends on the criteria.”
