The 29-year-old was in the side as a medium-fast bowler for the Indian team before the start of the series against England. But his terrific showing with the bat has made him look like a genuine all-rounder.

After scoring his maiden test fifty at the Gabba Test in Australia, Shardul Thakur has now scored two back to back half-centuries in both innings of the fourth Test at the Oval. Both the knocks came in a very important phase in the game and helped India come back in the game after a poor first innings score.

Former India batsman VVS Laxman thinks Shardul Thakur can be a very good all-rounder for India in coming games as he thinks that he has got almost every shot in the book.

“Credit to Shardul Thakur. Hats off to him. First innings, he was the saviour for the Indian team, and now in this innings as well. Some of the shots he played… all around the park… the cover drive off Moeen Ali, the pull shot, the straight drive, the lofted drive… he’s got all the shots in the book. A very good display of batting from Shardul Thakur,” Laxman said on ESPNCricinfo.

England openers Rory Burns and Hasim Hameed have started well and they are unbeaten at the end of the fourth day’s play. Thakur is hopeful to keep England under pressure on the final day and thinks Jadeja has a big role to play with the ball.

“We are into the last day. The game is equally poised. Both teams are pushing hard for a result, you can’t expect a lot more. All we need is an early wicket, or even if we get a couple of wickets in the middle, the pressure will be on them.”

“We will need to keep pushing them back. There can be a bit of reverse swing with the older ball. There are enough footholes. Jadeja will be obviously bowling into the rough. I think there could be a bit of reverse swing on offer later today.”
