Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Manchester City are allegedly interested in signing Barcelona utility player Sergi Roberto on a free transfer in the January transfer window.
As reported by the Spanish publication Fichajes, Sergi Roberto seems to be on his way out of Barcelona as a free agent during the summer transfer window next season. Atletico Madrid and Manchester City are both interested in signing the 29-year-old midfielder if a Bosman deal occurs.
Sergi Roberto began his football career at Barcelona’s prestigious La Masia when he was 14 years old in 2006. And, at the age of 18, he had already broken into the Camp Nou first-team system after only four years of professional football. Since then, the Spanish international has progressed tremendously at Barcelona, where he has established himself as a valuable asset for managers thanks to his versatility as a midfielder and a full-back.
Sergi Roberto is now featuring as a rotational player for FC Barcelona
Barcelona’s utility player has made 315 appearances so far, scoring 12 goals and assisting 37 others in the process. He is 29 years old. Although Roberto has reached the last year of his contract with the Blaugrana, the club is concerned about his long-term future since he has entered the final year of his deal. Atletico Madrid and Manchester City have both shown an interest in taking advantage of the current circumstances.
Barcelona’s fourth captain, Sergi Roberto has been connected with Atletico Madrid before, when the Rojiblancos expressed an interest in bringing him to the club during the summer transfer window. Given the fact that Kieran Trippier is still being linked with a move to Manchester United, the club’s persistent interest in the Barcelona star makes a lot of sense.
Roberto might also prove to be a useful alternative for Atletico Madrid given the uncertainty surrounding the future of Hector Herrera. Manchester City, on the other hand, has shown an interest that is a little unexpected.
What is in store in Sergi Roberto’s future?
At the Etihad Stadium, the Premier League winners do not need a right-back, since Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo are both in excellent form. As a result, with Fernandinho nearing the end of his professional career, Roberto might be considered as a possible successor in the Manchester City midfield unit.
It is said that Atletico Madrid and Manchester City are both interested in a Bosman transfer for the 29-year-old, who according to the report will not be signing a new deal with the Spanish giants. What remains to be seen is whether or not the Spanish international will be able to leave Camp Nou and whether or not either Atletico Madrid or Manchester City will be able to secure his services.
Arsenal has also added the Spaniard to their wishlist for the 2022 season. Even if Roberto’s age may be a deterrent to Arsenal’s ‘Project Youth,’ his availability at no cost will be welcomed by the club nevertheless. Furthermore, if City gives him a contract, it becomes improbable that he will want to come to Arsenal and contribute to the development of the club when he can just go and play for Guardiola and win immediately.
