Chelsea Lock Horns With Manchester United And Tottenham For Alessio Romagnoli

Chelsea Tuchel

Alessio Romagnoli, the captain of AC Milan, is attracting attention from the Premier League’s major teams as his contract at the San Siro expires, with Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham keen to sign him.

According to Transfer Market Web, Manchester United and Chelsea have joined Tottenham in the pursuit of AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli, who is currently on loan from the Italian club. The Premier League heavyweights are interested in signing the centre-back on a free transfer.

Since joining the club from AS Roma in 2015, Alessio Romagnoli has established himself as a reliable presence in the AC Milan defence. A year after playing a significant part in their rebirth, the club captain has found it tough to get into Stefano Pioli’s squad in 2021, with injuries and form playing a major factor in his chances of making the squad.

Milan has offered him a contract extension that would pay him far less than his present salary of €6m each season

Because Pioli prefers Simon Kjaer and Fikayo Tomori as his favourite centre-back pairing, Romagnoli has found himself in a position of limited regular playing time. His contract with the club is set to expire in 2022. The 26-year-old could be an excellent addition to any team wanting to bring in a defender with extensive experience.

Furthermore, Milan has offered him a contract extension that would pay him far less than his present salary of €6m each season. Such an occurrence is likely to have irritated him, and he may decide to leave San Siro as a result. There are teams that would be willing to meet his financial demands while also providing him with a spot in a competitive squad.

There has been substantial recent interest from Spain’s major clubs, particularly from cash-strapped Barcelona, who are looking to recruit the defender on a free transfer in the near future. However, given the interest shown by Premier League clubs, Romagnoli may explore a transfer to England, where teams may be willing to pay a higher salary and where he would be a part of a more demanding league.

Tottenham have been heavily connected with a transfer in recent weeks, with the appointment of Antonio Conte as the club’s new coach. Recently, the advent of the Italian has heightened the interest in Serie A players, and the manager is prioritising defensive acquisitions to strengthen his backline, according to reports.

Spurs are apparently facing heavy competition from Chelsea and Manchester United for the services of an experienced defender who can play at the back for the next several years, as reported by the Mirror. It’s possible that Romagnoli is one of their targets.

Which club will Romagnoli finally choose?

It was only until the Spanish club increased their asking price that Chelsea’s dogged pursuit of Sevilla striker Jules Kounde came to a close. Following the departure of Kurt Zouma to West Ham United, Thomas Tuchel is looking for a trustworthy alternative at the defence. In addition, the possibility of losing crucial player Antonio Rudiger, who is nearing the end of his current contract, has left Chelsea in a difficult position.

Manchester United have been stumbling on the defence in recent weeks, prompting many to call for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to spend money on particular, high-profile defenders to rectify the situation. Raphael Varane, who joined the club in the summer, has had a difficult time with injuries, while Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Eric Bailly have all struggled to find consistency.

Romagnoli has the ability to show himself at any of the three English clubs he chooses, including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham since he can bring his high-level expertise from Italy to England. The AC Milan player might potentially be a cheap acquisition if he performs well at either of those clubs, given the fact that he will be available at a reduced price in January or for free in the summer of 2021.
