Latest Liverpool News: The referee, Mark Clattenburg, has rendered his decision about the goal that was disallowed for Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema during Liverpool’s match versus Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
The former official in the Premier League believes that it was fortunate for the Reds that the goal scored by Benzema was overturned by the video assistant referee.
Benzema scored a goal for his team just before halftime. Thus, taking advantage of the weak defensive play of the Reds. However, the goal was disallowed due to offside after a very long review by the video assistant referee (VAR).
Although Alisson was able to make the save, Benzema was able to get another shot off as the ball took a bounce from Ibrahima Konate and Fabinho on its way back to him.
This time, the Real Madrid striker was successful in putting the ball into the back of the goal. But the video assistant referee upheld the verdict of the official who was on the field and called him off-side.
Mark Clattenburg has said that the goal should have been allowed to stand since the ball came off of Fabinho’s foot last. It was not an accidental move on the part of the Brazilian player.
Latest Liverpool News: What did the former referee say?
In his piece for The Daily Mail, the former referee wrote the following:
“Karim Benzema’s goal that he scored in the first half was incorrectly called offside. Therefore, Real Madrid will feel that they were treated fairly with the final outcome. Federico Valverde was the first to recover the loose ball. Although it was obvious that it had come off Fabinho’s foot.
It was up to the video assistant referee to determine whether the Liverpool midfielder had deflected the ball on purpose or if it had happened by mistake. The fact that Fabinho dove in to get to the ball leads me to believe that what he did was on purpose. But the VAR determined that it wasn’t. Maybe because they felt they should stay with the judgement that was made on the field. Liverpool had the luck.”
Vinicius Junior ultimately scored the game-winning goal for Carlo Ancelotti’s squad late in the second half. The team went on to win the Champions League for the 14th time in the club’s illustrious history.
Liverpool will be desperate to get back on track after their loss. But Real Madrid will continue to add to their Champions League history
Real Madrid has shown once again why they are the undisputed champions of Europe and why they should not be underestimated.
Many people predicted that Liverpool would triumph over Real Madrid in the championship game this season. But Real Madrid played remarkably well against a formidable Liverpool team.
It is quite remarkable that the team from the capital of Spain has been victorious in the Champions League competition no less than five times in the last nine years.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will be doing all they can to get back on track after their disappointing season end. They concluded the season with only two domestic cups despite their pursuit of a historic quadruple earlier in the year.
Jurgen Klopp’s team had a great season overall. They lost just four times out of 63 games. But, they were unable to win the championship in the end.
