Liverpool Newsnow: James Milner, a 37-year-old midfielder, is entering the last months of his contract at Anfield. But the Reds have reportedly yet to begin contract discussions with the player.
Since moving to Merseyside from Manchester City with Brendan Rodgers’s team, Jürgen Klopp has made no secret of his affection for the former Leeds and Aston Villa player. Milner has been a part of the team that has won the Premier League, the Champions League, and both domestic cups in England since the German’s arrival.
After signing an agreement with the midfielder last summer, the 55-year-old is eager to keep him in L4. The Athletic reports that with his contract expiring in June, he has yet to initiate contract negotiations with the Reds. According to David Ornstein, the veteran may perhaps follow Roberto Firmino and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in staying at Liverpool until the end of their contracts.

If both the parties can’t work out a contract, the report claims, club management will accept that he will join another team. The 37-year-old midfielder is in a rare position to prolong his career, given that he still continues to perform. On June 6, nine days after the season’s last game and less than a month before he ends his contract, Milner signed a new contract on reduced terms. The final decision was taken a week ago after the player was convinced to remain by the club’s trophy parade after winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

What will the Reds do?
Even though Ornstein said last week that Liverpool was “increasingly unlikely” to acquire Jude Bellingham, this fresh story merely helps to underscore a scenario that has not altered. The Athletic’s reporter rightly pointed out that Liverpool’s current financial condition might pit them against fierce rivals Manchester City and Real Madrid.
The fact that Klopp has admitted there are “different plans” for Milner at Liverpool is maybe the only difference between now and this time last year. It could be at odds with the idea that the manager is trying to retain his vice-captain on the team for another year, as it seems like Milner has “other plans” than just “wants to keep playing.” It’s unclear whether Liverpool’s offer would include a coaching position in addition to limited playing time for the seasoned pro.
