How Chelsea Managed To Tame The Wolves To Book A Place In The Next Round Of The FA Cup

Spanish attacking duo of Pedro and Diego Costa ensured that their Chelsea made it to the sixth round of the FA Cup after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 on Saturday at the Molineux stadium. Antonio Conte’s men can now look at securing a domestic double as they are also favorites to win the Premier League.

However, it wasn’t all easy for the Blues as it took them over an hour to breakdown the stubborn home side’s resistance. Paul Lambert’s men had managed to eliminate Premier League side Stoke City and Liverpool in their previous FA Cup round fixtures but couldn’t manage to make it three Premier League teams in a row.

The hosts started off on the front foot just the way they did at Anfield with Begovic having to tip over a cross from the right side in the first minute of the game and Chelsea youth player Gary Saville almost fired them into the lead only to smash his fierce left footed effort onto the post.

Fabregas played in a delightful pass over the top for Willian but the Brazilian didn’t manage to take his opportunity. The Wolves continuously hounded Chelsea when they were in possession. Helder Costa shot straight into the arms of Begovic after a neat turn on the right.

In the second half, Pedro and Zouma fired long range efforts wide away from the goal and Diego Costa showed great skill and strength to evade Danny Bath and fire a shot into the side netting.

The pressure on the Wolves defense was mounting as Conte’s men looked to press for a goal and their dominance was rewarded when Fabregas and Costa split the Championship strugglers’ defense and Willian sent in a perfect cross from the right for the onrushing Pedro to head into the bottom corner to give Chelsea the lead in the 65th minute. The remarkable Spanish winger has now scored in all FA Cup rounds Chelsea have played in this season.

Fabregas was in space to seal the game but his shot was blocked, although, Chelsea did not have to wait too long for their second, and Diego Costa managed to get on the score sheet.

After N’golo Kante drove a forward run to the Wolves penalty box, the ball deflected unfortunately off Wolves left back and kindly for Costa to rifle a shot into the bottom corner to secure Chelsea’s victory.
