Mikel Arteta Makes It Clear Who’s To Blame For Arsenal Throwing Away The League Title

Liverpool NewsNow

Mikel Arteta accepted full responsibility for Arsenal’s failure to contend for the title after a disheartening 3-0 home defeat to Brighton, which effectively extinguished their hopes of lifting the trophy. It was not a good day for Gooners across the globe.

Mikel Arteta appeared to hold himself accountable for Arsenal’s downfall in the title race following their loss to Brighton at the Emirates Stadium, ultimately handing the league crown to Manchester City.

Arsenal’s Loss to Brighton; Historic Title Slip Under Mikel Arteta

In truth, Brighton outperformed Arsenal on all fronts, showcasing superior tactical awareness and physicality. The Seagulls applied relentless pressure and disrupted Arsenal’s rhythm, displaying composure and control in possession that the Gunners sorely lacked.

Arteta’s despondency was evident as he couldn’t hide his sadness after the final whistle, openly acknowledging the low morale within the team. During an interview with Sky Sports, the Spanish manager candidly admitted, “Hate the feeling of letting people down when they are really expecting something. That is my greatest regret today.”

He further reflected on the rapid shift in emotions, remarking, “A week ago, was standing here feeling proud, and today we have to apologize for our performance in the second half. It is unacceptable.”

Arteta emphasized that while there is still a mathematical chance, contemplating the title at this point seems impossible. He stressed the need to assess the outcome and performance in the second half, identify the reasons behind it, and respond in a different manner moving forward.

Brighton outplayed Arsenal, taking the lead right from the beginning, making it Arsenal’s poorest display of the season. In the 50th minute, Julio Enciso seized the opportunity as he found himself unmarked in the six-yard box and headed the ball past Aaron Ramsdale, giving the visitors the lead. It became apparent that defender Jakub Kiwior collapsed, clutching his ankle, thereby providing Enciso with the time and space to punish Arsenal.

Player responses after the loss

Arteta’s team failed to mount a significant offensive response and found themselves two goals behind with only minutes remaining in the second half.

Brighton’s second goal added a touch of irony to their victory, as it came as a result of a blunder by former Seagulls player Leandro Trossard. The goal would have been even sweeter for Brighton fans considering Trossard’s history with the club and his desire to leave the Amex.

Towards the end of the match, Pervis Estupinan capitalized on Aaron Ramsdale’s save, reacting quickly to score and concluding a remarkable afternoon for Arsenal.

After the game, Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard echoed his manager’s sentiments, expressing the difficulty of the situation and the need to be realistic. He stated, “It looks difficult, to be honest. We have to be realistic. Do not think City are going to make many mistakes now.”

Odegaard emphasized the importance of finishing the season on a positive note, especially for the fans who have supported the team. Despite acknowledging the team’s accomplishments throughout the season, he expressed disappointment with the way they concluded, particularly the three games leading up to the Chelsea match and the performance in the game against Brighton.
