What Went Wrong For Liverpool Once Again, As They Failed To Beat Sevilla

Liverpool

The Match Report-

Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw against Sevilla on the night Champions League football returned to Anfield. In a pulsating game which was packed with end to end football, Liverpool and Sevilla ended up sharing a point in their encounter in group E. Liverpool superstar Philippe Coutinho started on the bench for Jurgen Klopp and his side were stunned with just 5 minutes on the clock. Sevilla took the lead through their marksman striker Wissam Ben Yedder who managed to tap in the ball from close range after Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren missed a simple cross from the left-hand side from Escudero.

However, Liverpool were not going to hold back and started playing heavy metal football like they do. In the 21st minute, Roberto Firmino got the hosts back into the game after former Sevilla left-back Albero Moreno crossed for the Brazilian forward. 1-1 and Liverpool began to dominate proceedings at Anfield. Emre Can almost gave Liverpool the lead a few minutes later after a sweeping move ended in the German dragging his shot just wide of the post.

But it wasn’t too long before Liverpool took the lead in the 37th minute of the game and new summer acquisition Mohammad Salah gave the Reds plenty to rejoice about. The Egyptian winger won back position in a dangerous spot after dispossessing Steven N’zonzi and fired in a shot which took a heavy deflection and looped over Sevilla goal-keeper Sergio Rico.

Sadio Mane was then brought down inside the box by right back Nicolas Pareja and Liverpool were awarded a penalty just before half-time. Roberto Firmino stepped up but only managed to hit his spot-kick onto the post to let Sevilla off the hook despite sending Rico the wrong way. Little did he know that it would come back to haunt his side.

Leading 2-1 at the break, Liverpool dropped their intensity in the second half and had chances few and far between, but the home team was still dominating the game. However, in the 72nd minute of the game, Joaquin Correa latched onto a pass from Luis Muriel and beat keeper Loris Karius in the Liverpool goal to equalize for the visitors.

Liverpool sent on Coutinho to make an impact but the 25-year-old couldn’t do much with the limited time, and Jurgen Klopp saw his defender Joe Gomez get sent off for a second yellow card shown by the referee in stoppage time.

It’s The Inconsistency That Hurts-

After the positive start made initially by Klopp’s side, they have once again lacked the consistency. This has been the problem for the Merseyside outfit, since the German manager took over and they have handed opponents free points at times. This was supposed to be a home game and the Reds were expected to win, though that was not meant to be the case once again.

It is understood that the La Liga giants are not an easy team to beat and the game did end in a draw, yet the players could have produced a better result based on the overall form that Liverpool have shown in the past few months now.
