Arsenal and Chelsea wanted the Euro 2024 star

Arsenal and Chelsea wanted the Euro 2024 star

Arsenal and Chelsea both made moves to sign Athletic Club’s rising star, Nico Williams, during the recently concluded transfer window. The two Premier League giants were keen to bolster their attacking options and saw the young Spanish international as an ideal addition. Nico Williams, who has steadily climbed through the ranks at Athletic Club, has attracted significant attention due to his performances on both the domestic and international stages.

At just 22 years old, Williams has already established himself as a key figure in the Athletic Club’s first team. Since breaking into the senior squad in the summer of 2021, he has continued to impress with his pace, dribbling, and overall attacking prowess. Last season, he was one of the standout performers for Athletic Club, contributing to 27 goals across 37 matches. His tally included 8 goals and 19 assists, making him one of the most productive wingers in La Liga.

Williams’ exploits weren’t limited to club football. He carried his fine form into Euro 2024, where he played a crucial role in Spain’s successful campaign. His performances on the international stage further boosted his profile, and it was no surprise that several top European clubs began to circle around him. Barcelona, long known for their ability to attract top Spanish talent, were reportedly the front-runners to secure his services.

However, the Blaugrana’s ongoing financial difficulties put a halt to their pursuit. Despite being close to finalizing a deal, they couldn’t get the transfer over the line due to budgetary constraints. This opened the door for other clubs, including Arsenal and Chelsea, to make their moves.

Arsenal, eager to add more depth to their forward line, saw Williams as an ideal fit for their high-tempo, attacking style of play. His versatility, being able to operate on both wings, was particularly appealing to the north Londoners. With the Gunners already boasting a strong attacking lineup, Williams would have provided further competition and options for Mikel Arteta.

Chelsea, too, were keen on the young winger. The Blues have been in search of attacking reinforcements, especially after an inconsistent season in front of goal. Williams’ ability to take on defenders and create chances would have added a new dimension to their attack. With Chelsea undergoing a transition under their new manager, bringing in young, dynamic talent like Williams aligned with their long-term vision.

Opinion:

Despite the interest from both Premier League clubs, a move didn’t materialize. Williams, being a loyal product of Athletic Club’s renowned youth academy, was reportedly hesitant to leave the club where he has grown and developed. Furthermore, his desire to compete in European competitions with his childhood team was a significant factor in his decision to stay.

In the end, Williams opted to remain at Athletic Club, a decision that speaks to his commitment to the Basque club. While the allure of Premier League football and the financial incentives might have been tempting, his attachment to Athletic Club and his ambitions with them proved stronger.

Arsenal and Chelsea missing out on Nico Williams might be a blessing in disguise. While the young winger has immense potential, adapting to the Premier League can be a challenging task, especially for players coming from La Liga. Staying at Athletic Club allows him to continue his development in a familiar environment. If he continues his upward trajectory, the Premier League clubs might revisit their interest in the future, and by then, Williams could be even more prepared for the challenges that English football presents.
