Arsenal could consider a part-exchange deal to sign the left-back

Arsenal is reportedly planning a move for Inter Milan’s top-rated left-back, Federico Dimarco, next summer. The Gunners could consider offering a part-exchange deal that includes cash and a player to tempt the Italian side. With Real Madrid also showing interest in the Italian international, Arsenal faces stiff competition for the 26-year-old Serie A winner. This deal could be a major move, but it raises questions about whether the north Londoners actually need another left-back.

At present, Arsenal’s left-back situation looks well-covered. They have a solid group of players who can fill the role, and it seems almost unnecessary to bring in another option. Jurrien Timber, despite being a right-footer, has already been deployed in that position, showing his versatility. Meanwhile, summer signing Riccardo Calafiori is also seen as a long-term option, although he has yet to fully settle into the squad. Additionally, there’s Kieran Tierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko, both natural left-backs, though their status at the club remains unclear due to injuries and potential transfer rumors.

Arteta’s side doesn’t appear short of left-back choices, yet the pursuit of Dimarco signals the club’s intent to upgrade in this position. Federico Dimarco has proven himself as one of the best in Serie A, with both defensive solidity and attacking prowess. He also brings experience, having been part of a title-winning team in Italy, which might be a factor Arsenal values. Inter Milan, however, seems hesitant to part with the defender, having already turned down advances from Bayern Munich in the last transfer window. They will likely demand a substantial offer if they are to consider letting him leave.

The proposed deal would reportedly include Zinchenko, who was pivotal in Arsenal’s campaign last season, but whose injuries have hindered his consistency. While Zinchenko’s technical ability is unquestionable, his fitness has raised concerns. Arteta might view Dimarco as a more reliable option going forward, considering his recent success with Inter and international experience with Italy.

However, this transfer would come at a cost. Inter Milan may want more than just Zinchenko in return for Dimarco, and adding a significant cash sum could make the deal harder to justify. Arsenal’s fans might question why the club is targeting a position where they already have multiple options, especially when they have other areas, such as central midfield, that might need more attention in the transfer window.

Opinion:

If Arsenal proceeds with this plan, it could also spell the end for Kieran Tierney at the club. The Scottish international has struggled to secure a consistent spot in the starting lineup, and rumors of his potential exit have circulated for months. A move for Dimarco might push Tierney out the door, especially if Arsenal continues to shuffle its defensive options.

While Arsenal’s interest in Dimarco shows the club’s ambition to build a squad capable of challenging for major honors, it raises the question of whether this is the best use of resources. Arsenal already has depth in the left-back position, and investing heavily in another player there may not be the most strategic move. The Gunners might be better off focusing on other key areas of the squad rather than adding more competition for a spot that already has several contenders.
