Arsenal on the verge of completing a game changing €65 million signing

Over the last few seasons, Arsenal have had an up and down journey. Mikel Arteta’s side managed to establish themselves as one of England’s leading title contenders, but they have not been crowned Premier League champions since 2004.

Despite significant investment and a promising young squad, the club has slipped at key moments. Their attack has shown sparks, but at times has lacked punch in crucial games. The team has played well, but something has been missing to break that barrier and become champions again. That ‘something’ could be just around the corner.

Arsenal on the verge of completing a game changing €65 million signing

According to Portuguese media O Jogo, quoted by Football Transfers, Arsenal have already agreed a deal with Sporting CP for Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres. The figure is around €65 million. The 26-year-old striker has scored 96 goals in just 102 appearances for the Lisbon club, which has attracted the attention of several European giants. The deal would be made official after the Portuguese Cup final, where Sporting face Benfica. The move positions Arsenal as one of the most active clubs in the summer transfer window.

Gyökeres represents a bold gamble. His style fits what Arteta has been asking for: a striker with physical presence, pace and a nose for goal. Unlike Gabriel Jesus, who plays a lot outside the box, the Swede lives inside it. He is direct, consistent and creates his own chances. His time at Coventry City already showed signs of what he could become, but what he has done in Portugal has surpassed all expectations.

The interesting thing here is to see how he will adapt to the pace of the Premier League. It is not the same to dominate in the Portuguese league as it is in England, where spaces are reduced and centre-backs are unforgiving. However, the confidence he exudes and his ability to create danger from almost any angle suggest that he can make a difference.

BTP Opinion:

The other big question is whether Gyökeres will be the missing piece for the Gunners to finally lift the trophy. He has everything to be. But it will also depend on how Arteta reorganises his attack: will he continue to rely on Havertz in certain games? The arrival of the Swede opens up new tactical possibilities. He can play alone, with a second striker, or even drop to the wing in specific situations.

From another perspective, the signing also speaks of the club’s ambition. It is not just about filling a gap, but about making a statement of intent. Arsenal are tired of fighting without reward. They want goals, but they also want to intimidate. The Gunners want to be that team that not only plays well, but also win. And for that, sometimes you need a striker with a killer instinct. If Gyökeres responds as he has so far, Arsenal can dream big. But as always in this sport, dreaming is not enough. We will have to see if the goal also comes when it hurts the most.
