Arsenal And Chelsea Still Retain Interest On 21 Years Old Defender

Ousmane Diomande continues to generate noise in the market. His great season with Sporting CP has not gone unnoticed and English clubs are swarming behind the Ivorian defender. Interest has been strong for months, but now Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have also joined the fray.

Arsenal and Chelsea, who have been tracking him for some time, remain firmly in the running. Diomande is only 21 years old, but he is already showing the poise and presence of an experienced centre-back. His £67m clause hasn’t scared anyone away, although it does generate debate in the offices of those who want him.

According to Caught Offside, Arsenal are still interested in Diomande, although his domestic situation puts him on hold. With William Saliba as a defensive mainstay and no clear signs of an exit, the Gunners will not immediately pounce. Diomande was considered by the club as a possible replacement for the Frenchman, but that scenario no longer seems so urgent. Still, he remains on the table as a strategic option to reinforce the backline. The problem lies in the price: the 67 million Sporting are demanding is a high barrier for a club that has other priorities and a calculated budget.

BTP Opinion:

Does it make sense for Arsenal to spend so much on a centre-back if Saliba stays? No, at least not now. Saliba and Gabriel form one of the best pairings in the Premiership. Adding Diomande would make sense only if the Frenchman left or if the team opted for a three centre-back defence. Otherwise, paying such a sum for a substitute breaks with the sporting and financial logic of the club.

Could that position change if another club steps forward? Yes, if Chelsea step on the gas and approach Sporting with a concrete proposal, Arsenal could act out of fear of losing a player they admire. Sometimes rival moves trigger impulsive reactions in the market, and Arteta’s side do not want to be left empty-handed again as happened with Mudryk.

What if interest from Aston Villa or Crystal Palace grows? Arsenal probably won’t see him as a threat. Diomande, by profile, is aiming for a club that plays in the Champions League and fights for titles. Villa can offer him minutes, but not the ideal scenario. Crystal Palace have an interesting project, but not the current hierarchy to attract this kind of talent.

A different way to look at this case is from the player’s own point of view. Diomande could wait one more year in Portugal, strengthen his signings and force a clearer exit in 2026. This not only improves his chances, but also pushes the big players to negotiate with less pressure. The market sometimes rewards patience. And if Arsenal want the transfer to make sense, they will also have to play with time on their side.
