54 Goals Striker Still Wants To Join Arsenal Over Manchester United

This summer’s transfer window has already begun to take shape in England, with Arsenal and Manchester United both making a strong push for an elite striker. Both clubs have struggled for goals all season, and know they need a striker who can deliver reliable numbers. In that context, Viktor Gyökeres has emerged as a shared target. The Swede, who exploded onto the scene at Sporting CP with scandalous numbers, has captured the full attention of the two Premier League giants. The battle for his signature promises to be one of the most tense chapters of the summer.

According to The Mirror, Arsenal and Manchester United are in the thick of the bidding for Gyökeres, who has scored 54 goals in 52 appearances for Sporting this season. The Red Devils have accelerated their interest and dream of seeing him alongside Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo up front. However, the report claims that the striker has already told his club of his preference: he wants to wear the Arsenal shirt. The Gunners see him as a direct alternative to Benjamin Sesko, but the Swede’s personal preference could tip the balance. Sporting, meanwhile, are willing to sell for a figure in excess of £60m.

BTP Opinion:

Is Gyökeres the striker Arsenal need? On the face of it, the numbers are unassailable. A striker who scores more goals than games played doesn’t come along every day. But beyond the stats, you have to consider his style. Gyökeres plays with his back to goal, fights for every ball, and has a remarkable ability to shoot with both legs. If Arteta wants a “9” with physicality and mobility, he will hardly find a better option in this market.

Why would the Swede prefer to play at the Emirates rather than Old Trafford? The answer may lie in the football. Arsenal have a defined playing structure, with youngsters growing together, and an attacking dynamic that favours strikers with a sense of space. By contrast, United are still searching for an identity. Rasmus Højlund arrived as a promising player and did not fully explode. Gyökeres, at 27, needs a clear context. Arteta’s project offers that, along with the chance to fight for the Premier League from day one.

Is he worth paying more than £60m for? In this market, yes. When you see that strikers like Jackson or Darwin Nunez cost similar figures without offering half the return, the price seems fair. Besides, Sporting know they can’t keep him much longer. Arsenal cannot hesitate. If they let him go, they will regret it.

Another interesting reading of this move is in the figure of Ruben Amorim. The United boss failed to lure the Swede to United. This reinforces the idea that Arsenal’s sporting project now carries more weight than the names themselves. Sometimes, football is not decided on the bench, but on the pitch and in the ideas. And in that, Arteta’s side still have the upper hand.
