The Red Devils are prepared to swap Marcos Rojo with Leicester City’s Harry Maguire in the next few days. Manchester United is also planning to sell the Argentine international in order to afford the England international. Manchester United have fallen far behind their local rivals and eventual champions Manchester City last season. Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City smashed plenty of records as they stormed their way to the Premiership but United boss Jose Mourinho is now eager to get one over his fierce rival. The Portuguese boss has already signed wing back Diogo Dalot, midfielder Fred, and goalkeeper Lee Grant this season but is well aware that his side needs more players in order to challenge for the title.
Mourinho has identified that he wants to sign central defenders to add some more quality to his back line. So far, Mourinho has been dealt with massive setbacks regarding transfers for defenders as Barcelona have stolen the prime targets. Clement Lenglet decided to join Barcelona from Sevilla earlier last week while Samuel Umtiti signed a contract extension at the Camp Nou. AC Milan also reportedly rejected a bid from United for their prized asset Alessio Romagnoli and Mourinho is now frustrated at the lack of arrivals at Old Trafford.
However, the55-year-old is not giving up just yet as he continues his hunt for a star central defender. Another player who has just been linked with Manchester United is Leicester City defender Harry Maguire. The English international showed his class and brilliance for the Three Lions during the World Cup in Russia gaining many admirers.
The 25 year old Maguire has hinted at leaving the King Power Stadium this summer in order to join a club that can achieve success on a long term at a top club. The centre-back joined the Foxes only last summer but his value has risen tremendously after impressive outings for club and country. And Jose Mourinho has also been eyeing a move for the Leicester City man.
United are set to offload Marcos Rojo this summer as the 28 year old has lost his place in Mourinho’s first team. The Argentine joined Old Trafford back in the summer of 2014 from Sporting Lisbon in a £16m move but is at the exit door at Manchester United. Rojo scored a crucial goal against Nigeria in the FIFA World Cup is contracted with the Red Devils until June 2021 and could leave at a price of £16m.
However, Mourinho is now ready to spend big on Maguire with Leicester valuing him at around £55m-£60m. Even though Leicester would not be willing to sell Maguire, they probably cannot keep hold of a player against his will.
Why Selling Rojo Is Not A Good Call?
After the departure of Daley Blind and the recent injury to Antonio Valencia, it will only be advisable to let go of more defensive players, if the team can sign replacements. Selling him for the swap deal will not be that great of an achievement. The best deal will be if they can get Maguire and convince Rojo to stay and revive his career at The Theatre of Dreams.
